Ryan Briscoe
Ryan Briscoe (born September 24, 1981 in Sydney ) is an Australian racing driver . In 2003 he won the championship title in the Formula 3 Euro Series . He drove in the IndyCar Series from 2005 to 2015 .
Career
Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Briscoe began his career in karting , where he was active from 1994 to 2000. He also made his debut in formula racing for the Prema Powerteam and competed in an Italian Formula Renault race . In 2001 his main focus was on the Italian Formula Renault, in which he secured the championship title for the Prema Powerteam ahead of his teammate César Campaniço . He won half of the races. He also started six out of ten races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished fourth in the overall standings with two wins. He also took part in one race in the French and two races in the German Formula 3 championship .
In 2002 Briscoe decided to switch to the international Formula 3000 championship , where he competed for Nordic Racing . He had problems keeping up in the new racing series and was replaced by Thed Björk after seven races . He was 23rd in the overall standings. He then returned to the Prema Powerteam and competed in German, French and Italian Formula 3. He was also a Formula 1 test driver for the Toyota team.
In 2003 Briscoe switched to the newly founded Formula 3 Euro Series with the Prema Powerteam . He won a total of eight races and secured the championship title from Christian Klien . He also made guest starts in the British Formula 3 championship and came third in the Formula 3 Masters in Zandvoort . In contrast to his former Formula 3 rival Klien, Briscoe did not receive a racing cockpit in Formula 1 in 2004 and became a test driver at Toyota Racing. After the original Friday test driver Ricardo Zonta had replaced the regular driver Cristiano da Matta , Briscoe took the position of Friday test driver in five races and took part in Grand Prix weekends.
In 2005 , Briscoe stayed with Toyota as one of several test drivers. He contested races this season in the IndyCar Series , in which he drove one of three Chip Ganassi Racing cars . The best result in his first season was eighth place. The season was overshadowed by a serious accident in Joliet . His car hit Michael Andretti's car , took off, caught fire when it hit the boundary wall and broke in two. Briscoe was flown to hospital with serious injuries. He suffered broken collarbones on both sides, a fractured foot and severe bruises on his arms, legs and back. In addition, he suffered from breathing difficulties from inhaling toxic fumes. Before his accident, which ended the season prematurely, he also completed a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series . In the overall ranking of the IndyCar Series, he was 19.
Briscoe made his comeback in 2006 in the A1GP series. His best result of four races was a third place. He then started for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing in four races in the IndyCar Series and achieved his first podium finish in the IndyCar Series as third in Watkins Glen . At the end of the season he finished 21st in the overall ranking. He also started two races each in the Champ Car Series, in the Rolex Sports Car Series and in the V8 Supercar series. In winter 2006/2007 Briscoe was again active for his home country in the A1GP and started in three races. Third place was again his best result. He then took part in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) for Team Penske in a Porsche RS Spyder . With three wins he finished second in the LMP2 category. He also went to Luczo-Dragon Racing at the Indianapolis 500, which he finished in fifth place. It remained his only start in the IndyCar Series in the 2007 season , which he finished in 24th place.
In 2008 he again contested four races in the ALMS and managed to finish one of them victoriously, but his main focus in the 2008 season was again on the IndyCar Series, in which he competed as a team-mate of Hélio Castroneves for the Penske team. In the sixth race on the Milwaukee Mile , Briscoe won his first race in the IndyCar Series. Two more victories followed in Lexington and his home race in Surfers Paradise during the season . His victory in Australia was not included in the ranking because the race was held after the official end of the season. Nevertheless, all regular pilots started the series. In the end, the racing driver took fifth place in the championship.
In 2009 , Briscoe stayed with Team Penske. As in the previous season, he won three races and led the championship for the first time. With eight second places, he achieved by far the most second places this season. In the end he only had to admit defeat to Ganassi pilots Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon . Before the season finale in Homestead , all three drivers still had realistic championship chances and more than clearly made up for victory as well as winning the title. The other drivers were at least one lap behind the leading trio. For the first time in the history of the IndyCar Series, the race went without a break, so that the decision about the victory was only won by the fuel-efficient driving style of Franchitti, who, unlike Briscoe and Dixon, avoided an additional refueling stop a few laps before the end.
2010 Briscoe denied his third season for the team Penske, which this season with Will Power for the first time a third driver used for the entire season, in the IndyCar Series. After he did not get beyond third place on the circuit, he scored his first win of the 2010 season on the Oval in Fort Worth . At the end of the season, he was behind his teammates who finished second (Power) and fourth (Castroneves) , Fifth overall. For the 2011 season , Briscoe stayed with Penske. While his teammate Power drove for the overall victory and finally became runner-up, Briscoe finished the season with a second place as the best result in sixth place in the championship. Within the team, he prevailed against Castroneves, who was eleventh. In addition, Briscoe took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series and in two races in the V8 Supercar series.
In 2012 , Briscoe completed another IndyCar season for the Penske team, which received a new engine partner in Chevrolet . At the Indianapolis 500 , he achieved pole position and finished fifth in the race. In the second oval race of the season, the Firestone 550 , he was third on the podium for the first time in the season. With a win in Sonoma and a second place in Baltimore , he finished two of the last three races on the podium. In the overall standings he was sixth and lost to Castroneves and Power within the team. He also took part in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series.
In 2013 Briscoe lost his IndyCar cockpit at Penske. He returned to the ALMS and was given a cockpit at Level 5 Motorsports . He won the LMP2 classification five times and was fifth in the LMP2 drivers classification. He also made his debut for Level 5 Motorsport at the 24 Hours of Le Mans . In addition, he returned to the Indianapolis 500 in the current season of the IndyCar Series. First he started for Chip Ganassi Racing and was twelfth at the Indianapolis 500. Then Panther Racing signed him as one of two substitute drivers for the dismissed JR Hildebrand . If there was overlap with his involvement in the long-distance scene, he entered it. Briscoe broke his right wrist on the first run of the Honda Indy Toronto . As a result, he was completely absent for a month. Briscoe completed six races for Panthers. In 2013, Briscoe also took part in four V8 Supercars races. He was third on the podium once.
In 2014 , Briscoe returned to a full-time IndyCar cockpit. He got a contract with Chip Ganassi Racing, the racing team for which he had completed his first IndyCar season. While two of his teammates, Dixon and Tony Kanaan , were winning races, fourth was Briscoe's best result. He finished the season in eleventh place. In 2014 , Briscoe also took part in three races for Corvette Racing in the newly established United SportsCar Championship (USCC). In 2015 Briscoe lost his full-time cockpit in the IndyCar Series. After James Hinchcliffe was seriously injured in training for the Indianapolis 500 , Briscoe took over the cockpit at Schmidt Peterson Motorsports for the race. Briscoe then shared the cockpit with Conor Daly for the rest of the season. Fifth place was his best result. He finished the season in 18th place overall. Briscoe also competes for Corvette Racing in a number of races in the 2015 United SportsCar Championship .
