The International Formula 3000 Championship (English: FIA Formula 3000 International Championship) was a racing series for formula racing cars, which in the 1985 season succeeded the Formula 2 European Championship that had existed until then . The 3000 stands for the engine displacement of 3000 cm³. From the 2005 season it was replaced by the GP2 series .

history

The first championship run took place on March 24, 1985 at Silverstone . This year eleven races and one invitation race took place in Willemstad on Curaçao ( Curaçao Grand Prix 1985 ). German Christian Danner became the first European champion .

In 1995 Judd returned to Formula 3000 after hapless Formula 1 years. When the series was converted into a brand formula in 1996 , they were commissioned to deliver the Judd KV unitary motors. The maintenance of the engines and the support of the teams was taken over by Zytek , under whose name the engines were also marketed. After the end of the championship, the engines were used as the basis for the units of the A1GP . The chassis came from Lola . From 1996 the type T96 / 50 , from 1999 the B99 / 50 and from 2002 the B02 / 50 .

From 1997, the races were held as part of the Formula 1 weekends. In the 2000s, the starting fields fell sharply, so that the championship was ended at the end of the 2004 season. It was succeeded by the GP2 series . Despite the decline of the championship, some regional championships were held according to the Formula 3000 regulations until 2009.

technology

From 2002 to 2004 uniform chassis of the type Lola B02 / 50 were used. They were typical seaters with a monocoque made of carbon . The total weight of the vehicle was 540 kg. The engine with its 3000 cm³ capacity mobilized approx. 330 kW. This, coupled with a sequential six-speed gearbox, allowed top speeds of almost 300 km / h. The tires came from Avon and had the dimensions 240/600 (front axle) and 330/620 (rear axle).
