Ricardo Zonta (born March 23, 1976 in Curitiba ) is a Brazilian automobile racing driver . Among other things, he took part in races for the Formula 1 World Championship between 1999 and 2005 . He is currently driving in the Stock Car Brasil .

Career

Kart

Like almost all of today's Formula 1 drivers, Ricardo Zonta began his career in karting . From 1987 to 1992 Zonta drove in various Brazilian kart series. In 1991 he won the Brazilian kart championship and began to get into formula racing .

Formula racing

In 1993, Zonta completed his first year in the Formula Opel Championship, a national racing series in Brazil . A year later he moved to the Brazilian Formula 3 championship , where he met his future Formula 1 teammate Cristiano da Matta . While Matta could win the series, Zonta finished fifth.

In 1995 Zonta showed his talent for the first time: He competed in two series at the same time, in Formula 3 in Brazil and in South African Formula 3. He was champion in both series. So he made the leap into the European Formula 3000 .

In the Draco Racing team in a Lola-Zytec-Judd , Zonta finished the 1996 season fourth. He also drove a race in the C-Class for Mercedes in the International Touring Car Championship .

In 1997 Zonta switched to Super Nova Racing and was able to secure the European Championship title in Formula 3000 with four victories this season. He also took part in the first Formula 1 tests for the Jordan team .

In 1999, Zonta completed his first Formula 1 season with the newly founded British American Racing team , or BAR for short . Not only for the team, but also for Zonta herself, the season was anything but satisfactory. In training for the second race, Zonta had an accident at his home Grand Prix of all places and suffered injuries to his ankle tendons. BAR and therefore also Zonta remained without points in 1999.

In 2000 BAR got the support of Honda , who became a new engine partner. Zonta scored three championship points and finished 14th in the world championship.

Zonta spent the next year as a test driver at Jordan. In two races he was allowed to replace regular driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen , but for 2002 he switched to the Telefonica Nissan Worldseries and won the title there.

From 2003 Zonta was a test driver at Toyota. In 2004 he replaced Cristiano da Matta for five races. As a replacement for Ralf Schumacher , Zonta took part in the 2005 US Grand Prix .

In the 2007 season, Zonta drove as a test driver for the French Renault F1 team.

Sports cars and GT sports

Even before his Formula 1 career, Zonta was active in GT racing . In 1998 Zonta drove a Mercedes-Benz CLK LM in the FIA GT Championship . Together with Klaus Ludwig , he won five out of ten races and thus secured the championship title. In addition to the FIA-GT, the Brazilian also drove the 24-hour race at Le Mans and completed tests at McLaren-Mercedes .

In 2008, exactly ten years later, Zonta saw his return to sports cars . For Peugeot Sport he started as a works driver at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He is also currently driving an Acura ARX-01b for Andretti Green Racing in the American Le Mans Series . As the third racing series, Zonta is also active in the US Grand-Am Sports Car Series in 2008 . Here he drove for the Krohn Racing Team in a Daytona prototype and was not very successful except for a podium with Niclas Jönsson . In 2009 Zonta stayed with Krohn Racing and concentrated on the Grand-Am in the sports car sector. However, his results with Jönsson remained mixed. Two overall wins and another podium were compared to several midfield placements and ended the season in 17th place.

In the 2010 season, Zonta drove a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670 R-SV for the German team Reiter Engineering in the newly founded FIA GT1 World Championship . Together with Frank Kechele he won the races in Spa-Francorchamps and Navarra.

Stock Car Brasil

Ricardo Zonta drove in the Brazilian racing series Stock Car Brasil as early as 2007 . Since 2008 he has had his own racing team, RZ Motorsport , for which he himself competed as a driver until 2014. He has been driving for Shell Racing since the 2015 season.
