report
background
The driver of the safety car , Oliver Gavin , borrowed a helmet from Alexander Wurz . The driver Ricardo Zonta , nominated for the 1999 season , traveled to the Grand Prix with four torn tendons in his foot. He was represented by Mika Salo in previous races .
training
Friday training
Eddie Irvine set the fastest time with a time of 1: 20.576, ahead of Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Jean Alesi, Fisichella, Zonta and, in seventh place, 1.3 seconds behind, Häkkinen. The slowest driver, Pedro Diniz, was around four seconds behind the fastest time.
Saturday training
Michael Schumacher achieved the best training time with 1: 19.281 ahead of Coulthard, Häkkinen, Irvine, Frentzen and Fisichella. The slowest driver, Luca Badoer, was around three and a half seconds behind the fastest time.
Qualifying
For the first time this season, Mika Häkkinen did not take pole position, as he had to admit defeat to Michael Schumacher by 29 thousandths. This is followed by Irvine, Coulthard, Barrichello and Frentzen. The slowest driver, Marc Gené, was around four seconds behind the fastest time.
Warm-up
In the warm-up before the race, David Coulthard set the fastest time with 1: 20.614, ahead of Barrichello, Herbert, Häkkinen, Fisichella, Irvine and Michael Schumacher in seventh place. The slowest driver, Marc Gené, was around five and a half seconds behind the fastest time.
run
Michael Schumacher moved aggressively in front of Häkkinen after the start so as not to give the Finn a chance to overtake. Before corner one, Trulli had to move onto the grass, whereupon his stern broke and hit Alesi and Barrichello to the side. Due to the chaos and the many parts on the track, the safety car had to be sent out onto the track for the first time. Alesi and Trulli had to end the race due to the accident, Barrichello made it back to the pits, where the car was repaired for a long time. Among other things, the left side radiator was fixed with adhesive tape. After the work, Barrichello came back into the race two laps behind. Meanwhile, Wurz rolled out in the pit lane because the drive shaft was broken. With the second lap, the race was released again, Häkkinen and Irvine missed the right time and Michael Schumacher was able to gain a lead. After the third lap, Michael Schumacher was one and a half seconds ahead of Häkkinen, followed by Irvine, Coulthard, Fisichella and Frentzen.
In the last corner, Zonta missed the apex; as a result, the rear of his car broke out and the right rear wheel hit the wall. Due to the difficult recovery of the car, the safety car had to be sent out onto the track for the second time. The race was reopened on lap seven. As with the first restart, Häkkinen missed the right time and Michael Schumacher was able to gain a lead again. After lap 15, the German was 2.7 seconds ahead of Häkkinen and 7.5 seconds ahead of third Irvine. In the same corner as Zonta, Hill hit the wall on lap 15; however, the car was left on the track because Hill could roll far enough from the racing line. The oil flag , a red and yellow striped flag, was waved for several laps .
Finally, on lap 29, Michael Schumacher, who was in the lead, was the third driver to pull his car into the last corner of the wall. When entering the curve, the German broke off the rear and when correcting the car slid too far outwards. The safety car did not have to be deployed thanks to a quick recovery with a crane. When asked what happened, Michael Schumacher answered only as follows:
"Can you have a bit of respect for humans!"
"Have a little respect for people!"
On lap 35, Villeneuve continued what had happened to Zonta, Hill and Michael Schumacher: he lost his car on the last corner; unlike the drivers mentioned before, Villeneuve's vehicle understeered and hit the wall head-on. This time the safety car was sent out for the third time. Häkkinen, Irvine and Ralf Schumacher were able to react in good time and went to the pit lane for a stop. At Irvine, however, they had problems with refueling and lost many seconds. Coulthard did not go to the pit lane until one lap later and had to line up further back in the field.
The race was reopened on lap 40. Häkkinen was able to keep the lead, Coulthard tried to get past Irvine on the outside, but hit Irvine's rear end and slid into the grass while Irvine spun. For this, Coulthard received a 10-second stop-and-go penalty six laps later . Panis, Zanardi and Badoer received the same penalty for blocking Fisichella and Frentzen from lapping. On lap 65, Frentzen, lying in second place, suffered a defect in the front right brakes and slid backwards into the wall at turn four. The safety car has now been sent out onto the track for the fourth time, as Frentzen was initially unable to get out alone. Due to the late safety car phase, the race was ended with the safety car for the first time in Formula 1 history and so Häkkinen won the race in Canada ahead of Fisichella and Irvine. Mika Häkkinen's trophy was presented by Lucien Bouchard , Prime Minister of the Canadian province of Québec .
After the race
Since three former Formula 1 world champions had an accident in the last corner, this corner became famous under the name "Walls of Champions" .
