Reports
background
The field of participants for the Canada GP was supplemented by several local guest starters, some of whom, however, competed with outdated, no longer competitive material. Al Pease , for example, carried out the last Grand Prix outing of an Eagle racing car by registering a private Eagle T1G with a Climax engine. His compatriot John Cordts used the same engine in a Brabham BT23B . Since several works teams also used a third car, the relatively high number of participants of 20 vehicles compared to the previous season races came about.
Ferrari did not compete as a works team in this and the two subsequent overseas races in the USA and Mexico . The missions with Pedro Rodríguez as driver were instead carried out by the North American Racing Team .
training
Although he had no more chances of winning the title, Jacky Ickx presented himself in good shape all weekend and secured pole position. Half a second behind, Jean-Pierre Beltoise , Jochen Rindt and Jackie Stewart, who is already world champion, finished two to four on the grid with identical lap times.
run
Rindt initially took the lead in front of Ickx and Beltoise. Stewart fought for third place on lap two, second on lap five and overtook Rindt on lap six to take the lead. Ickx was also able to overtake Rindt a little later and from then on dueled with Stewart for the top position. Fourth-placed Beltoise fell back a little after colliding with Al Pease during a lap maneuver. After the leading group had lapped Pease for the fourth time in lap 22, he was disqualified because of lack of competitiveness.
In the battle for the lead, Ickx and Stewart collided, causing both vehicles to spin. Ickx was then able to continue the race as the leader, while Stewart couldn't get his vehicle going and was eliminated. In the meantime, Jack Brabham had worked his way past Rindt to second place and thus completed a one-two for his own team.
With the third Matra factory driver Johnny Servoz-Gavin , who drove an MS84 and thus finished sixth, a driver with an all-wheel drive racing car received a world championship point for the first and only time in Formula 1 history.
