John Jeremy Miles (born June 14, 1943 in London - † April 8, 2018 ) was a British racing car driver who also worked as a music producer .
Career
The trained engineer and son of the actor Sir Bernard Miles drove a total of twelve Formula 1 races for Lotus in 1969 and 1970 . In 1969 he was supposed to drive the all-wheel-drive model Lotus 63 because the regular drivers Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt refused to drive the car, and Mario Andretti couldn't get along with it either.
After Hill had a serious accident at the end of 1969, did not return to the Lotus team and only drove privately used Lotus, Miles became the second works driver behind Rindt in the 1970 season. The year started well, as he was the best among a total of 5 Lotus drivers at the South African Grand Prix . Fifth place in the Lotus 49 gave him his only two championship points. Later in the season, Lotus used the Lotus 72 with which Rindt won in Zandvoort, while Piers Courage died. From the British GP, an old model 49C was used for Emerson Fittipaldi , while Miles was often eliminated, and Rindt won a total of 5 races. Rindt had a fatal accident in Monza after the wings of the Lotus had been removed, which Miles had advised against. He left the team. His successor was Reine Wisell , who first competed in the 1970 US Grand Prix .
Miles had also contested Formula 2 races for Lotus. After his active career, he continued to work for Lotus.
With Peter Watts, Miles founded the jazz label Miles Music in 1985 , on which u. a. Music by Guy Barker , Alan Barnes , Dave Cliff , Tubby Hayes , Peter King , Dick Morrissey , Mick Pyne , Alan Skidmore and Tommy Whittle appeared.
