The 1971 World Sports Car Championship was the 19th season of this championship. It started on January 10th and ended on July 24th, 1971.

championship

With the end of the 1971 season, the previously applicable technical regulations, which enabled the use of sports cars with engines up to 5 liters by means of special rules, ended. With that the racing car models Porsche 917 , Ferrari 512S and Lola T70 came to an end. While the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512S were still being driven regularly, Lola T70s hardly appeared in the entry lists.

The future in sports car racing belonged to the prototypes with 3-liter units. At Ferrari , a new 3-liter prototype, the 312PB, was developed and used by Scuderia . Alfa Romeo further developed the Tipo 33 and Matra used the MS660 in some races .

While Alfa Romeo celebrated three wins of the season, Scuderia Ferrari did not win in 1971. With eight wins this season, Porsche secured the brand world championship title for the third time in a row.
