Sports car world championship 1958
The 1958 World Sports Car Championship was the sixth season of this championship. It began on January 26th and ended on September 13th, 1958.
championship
For the 1958 season, the CSI created new technical regulations, the main content of which was to reduce the engine displacement to 3 liters. Regardless of this, Maserati withdrew its racing team from international motorsport for financial reasons after the end of the 1957 racing season.
The two dominant vehicles of the season were the Ferrari 250TR / 58 and the Aston Martin DBR1 / 300 . Although Aston Martin was able to win two races of the season with the DBR1 / 300, Ferrari was already world champion after the fifth round of the season. For Enzo Ferrari's team it was the fifth world title since the championship was introduced in 1953 . Scuderia works cars won the first three races of the season in Buenos Aires , Sebring and Sicily . It was not until the fourth round, the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring , that Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham clinched their first victory for Aston Martin. Due to the success of Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , Ferrari could no longer be overtaken in the overall standings and decided not to compete in the RAC Tourist Trophy , where Aston Martin celebrated their second win of the season.
As in previous years, championship points were awarded in the respective races for the first six placed in the order 8-6-4-3-2-1. The exception was the Tourist Trophy, where only the first four points in the order 4-3-2-1 were counted for the world championship. The five best results of the season counted for the overall ranking of the World Championship.
