The defining racing car model of the season, the works Porsche 956

The sports car world championship in 1983 was the 31st season of this championship. It started on April 10th and ended on December 10th.

championship

1983 had an all-important racing car model: the Porsche 956 . This year, twelve 956s were delivered to private teams, which differed from the works cars from 956-001 onwards by their consecutive chassis numbers from 956-101. After the Ford C100 did not return to the racetracks, the Lancia LC2 , which now also complied with Group C rules , turned out to be the only notable opponent, finishing second in the season just before Christmas in Kyalami . Otherwise, at least the first four places went to the Porsche 956, which made the world championship races among themselves.

In 1983, Stefan Bellof also lapped the Nordschleife with the works 956 during training for the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring as the first person with an average speed of over 200 km / h. In the race, however, his 956 took off on the large jumping hill near Pflanzgarten and overturned. The driver was not injured. At Le Mans , the Porsche 956 would have occupied the first ten places if a Sauber C7 had not driven into the phalanx with ninth place overall.

After Porsche had won all seven races, the renewed overall victory in the Manufacturers' World Championship came as no surprise. In the drivers category, Jacky Ickx was able to repeat his win from last year . He won the world championship by three points over his teammate Derek Bell .
