1000 km race on the Nürburgring 1983

Route of the Nordschleife in 1983

The 29th 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also Bitburger Pils ADAC 1000 Kilometres, Nürburgring , took place on May 29, 1983 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the third race of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

The endurance race on the Nürburgring, which was held for the first time in 1953, was held for the last time on the Nordschleife in 1983. The construction of the new Grand Prix circuit, which opened in 1984, had already had an impact on the route. The previous pit systems with the Dunlop tower, the start and finish house and the entire start and finish loop had disappeared . At the entrance to the Hatzenbach section, the existing small pit area was enlarged in order to accommodate all racing teams in the 1000 km race. The vehicles started the race from Döttinger Höhe, the finish line was a few 100 meters after the Hohenrain Passage. The construction site reduced the length of the route to 20.832 kilometers.

The safety requirements of Formula 1 had made the construction of the Grand Prix track necessary and during training it became clear to those involved that the time for the fast Group C sports cars on the Nordschleife was also up. Almost all drivers reported difficult conditions on the uneven mountain-and-valley track. The two Formula 1 drivers Riccardo Patrese and Michele Alboreto had big problems in the factory - Lancia LC2 , which according to Patrese was hardly drivable. "Our car is not drivable here, even if you take your foot off the accelerator on the straight, it is already sideways."

Two serious accidents overshadowed the race. In the 20th round of the Leading crashed Stefan Bellof in the plant - Porsche 956 and Walter Brun in Sehcar SH C6 separated heavy. Bellof had tried to pass the jumping hill at Pflanzgarten at full throttle. The Porsche took off, overturned in the air, and hit the guardrail the wrong way round. The wreck, which had lost its stern, did not come to a standstill until 400 meters after the Pflanzgarten. Bellof was able to get out of the wrecked car completely unharmed. Walter Brun had less luck with his accident in the cauldron. The car was completely destroyed and Brun had to go to hospital in Adenau with a broken arm, cuts and a concussion . The race was canceled and restarted after the damage had been repaired.

The winning duo Jochen Mass and Jacky Ickx had technical problems . After the restart, Mass came to the pits with a broken rear wishbone. The fast work of the Porsche mechanics and a battered engine in Bob Wollek and Stefan Johansson's Joest -956 saved the Porsche works drivers the overall victory. At the finish they had a 4-minute lead over the Joest car after a driving time of 5: 26: 34.630 hours.
