The 22nd 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also Int. XXII ADAC 1000 km race, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on May 30, 1976 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

For the 22nd time since 1953 , the elite of sports car racing met at the Nürburgring to start the 1000 km race . For years, the Nordschleife has been criticized for being too dangerous for current motorsport. The most heated discussion in the Formula 1 world was about the lack of safety equipment on the track. A few weeks after the 1000 km race, the long history of Formula 1 races on the Nordschleife ended. The final impetus for this came from Niki Lauda's serious accident at the German Grand Prix .

Before the race, there was criticism of the FIA's new Group 5 regulations , mainly expressed by specialist journalists . The group production cars were too similar to the touring cars that contested the 6-hour race of the European Touring Car Championship on the Nordschleife . This race was held at the beginning of July and ended with the overall victory of Hughes de Fierlant , Gunnar Nilsson and Claude de Wael in the Belgian Luigi Racing BMW 3.0 CSL . You missed the appearance of the sports car. The sports cars of the new Group 6 were also present at the Nürburgring, but in a separate event, which was held in May as a 300 km race and won by Reinhold Joest in a Porsche 908/03 .

The overall dwindling interest in sports car racing was also favored by the lack of current Formula 1 drivers. The few drivers from this monoposto series who, like Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass , competed in Formula 1 and sports car races in parallel, could not start because the Monaco Grand Prix was taking place on the same weekend . For the first time in the history of the sports car world championship, the 1000 km race collided with a Formula 1 world championship run.

The race

As in the previous Group 5 races, there was also a duel between Porsche and BMW at the Nürburgring . The two brands made up the majority of the starters. The only plant - Porsche 935 controlled Rolf Stommelen and the new factory driver Manfred Schurti . Porsche had interpreted the new regulations broadly and provided the 935 with a new flat front section and modified the rear wing. The car thus deviated greatly from the street version of the Porsche 911 . BMW decided not to use the 3.0 CSL Turbo works car. BMW Motorsport Director Jochen Neerpasch : We drove tests at the Nürburgring and discovered that our power transmission units were no longer able to cope with the almost doubled output. On a circuit like the Nürburgring, this becomes noticeable much faster and more clearly than on any other racetrack. As much as we would have loved to drive here, it should also be understandable that we cannot start a race with a works car with the absolute certainty that we will be out after half an hour.

The training was dominated by the Porsche racing cars. The best in qualification training was Manfred Schurti in the works 935, with a very fast lap time of 7: 37.700 minutes for a silhouette vehicle. Behind them were the Kremer Porsche from Bob Wollek and Hans Heyer and the two 934/5 from Gijs van Lennep / Hartwig Bertrams and Toine Hezemans / Tim Schenken .

At the beginning of the race the Porsche cars were in the lead, but due to the higher fuel consumption they came to the pits for the first refueling on lap eight. In the following laps, the two leading cars retired. Schurti stopped with a defective distributor cap at the airfield section. Since no problem was found after in-depth radio communication, the Porsche race management sent a mechanic to the vehicle with spare parts to repair the damage. Schurti was then able to start again. However, the race management immediately disqualified the car due to the use of outside help. Hans Heyer's Porsche was also taken out of the race after being disqualified. He had also called on outside help after damage to the half-wave.

After a two-thirds race distance, three BMWs were in the lead, and they were able to set faster lap times than the Porsche. However, technical problems also decimated the top vehicles at BMW. First, the second 3.5 CSL with Hughes de Fierlandt at the wheel in the carousel failed with a damaged suspension. Then with three laps to go, the leader John Fitzpatrick in the car with the number 8 stopped an engine failure at Hatzenbach. In the end, Albrecht Krebs and Dieter Quester won the Schnitzer -BMW with a clear lead over the best Porsche, driven by Toine Hezemans and Tim Schenken.
