Helmut Bross (born May 5, 1939 in Herrenberg ; † January 18, 2015 ) was a German racing driver and entrepreneur.

life and career

Helmut Bross, a trained industrial clerk, began his racing career in his youth as a driver of soap box races .

Formula Vau

From 1966 he drove Fuchs Formula Vee racing cars . After his first success of the season, which he finished in fourth place, he bought a Kaimann Formula Vee 1300 with the help of his father, with which he drove straight to first place at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry in Paris . As a result, from 1968 to 1970 he won the German Formula V championship three times and in 1972 the German championship in the 1.6 liter Super Vau on “Komet”. During this time, Bross drove in his class against racing legends such as Keke Rosberg , Helmut Marko , Harald Ertl and Arie Luyendyk .

Sports car racing

In the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1974 , Bross drove a Lola T290 together with Freddy Kottulinsky in the class for sports cars up to 2-liter displacement, but retired on the fifth lap after a technical defect; the race was part of the 1974 World Sports Car Championship . He achieved his greatest success in a race for the sports car world championship in 1976 when he finished sixth in the overall standings again at the Nürburgring with partner Eberhard Sindel in a Porsche 934 .

For many years Bross started as a privateer in the Interserie , in which he was overall winner in 1977 in the prototype class in a Lola T294-BMW. In 1999 he ended his active career.

For a long time, however, Helmut Bross was still regularly active in historical racing series. In June 2011, at the age of 72, he drove his private Lucchini racing car, built in 1986, a class C prototype , in the ADAC race for the “Stuttgarter Rössle” in second place among 70 participants.

Together with his two sons, Helmut Bross was active as team boss in the classic racing series. The Helmut-Bross team in addition to the features Lucchini Group C also a Royale RP Formula Ford , the Rory Byrne designed.
