300 km race on the Nürburgring in 1976

The Porsche 936 (left row in front in the direction of travel) made its racing debut

The 300 km race on the Nürburgring in 1976 , also XI. ADAC Goodyear 300, World Championship Sports Cars, Nürburgring Nordschleife , took place on April 4th on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgrings and was the third round of the sports car world championship of this year.

The race

For 1976 the FIA announced, in addition to the existing brand world championship, in which Group 5 cars started, a sports car world championship for Group 6 sports cars. Porsche originally planned to compete in the brand world championship only with the Porsche 935 . But the uncertainty about a future merger of the two racing series and the prestige of the supposedly more difficult sports car world championship prompted Porsche to develop a Group 6 car. Since this decision was made very late in 1975, there was little time left to develop the Porsche 936 .

Due to the new regulations, the 6-hour race in Vallelunga took place on the same day , in which the two Porsche works drivers Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass drove the Porsche 935. That is why the former works driver Rolf Stommelen returned to Porsche for this race. In its first race, he drove the 936, four minutes behind the winner Reinhold Joest in the Porsche 908/4, in fifth place in the overall standings.
