Guy Richard Goronwy Edwards , QGM (born December 30, 1942 in Macclesfield , United Kingdom ) is a retired British racing driver. In 1974 and 1976 he drove a total of eleven Grand Prix in Formula 1 .
Career
Guy Edwards was best known as the lifesaver of Niki Lauda . At the 1976 German Grand Prix on the Nordschleife , Lauda's Ferrari went up in flames after an accident. Together with Harald Ertl , Arturo Merzario and Brett Lunger , Edwards freed the victim from the burning wreck . For this act, Edwards was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal .
In 1978 Edwards won two races in the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series with a March 781 used by RAM Racing . He competed eight times in the 24-hour race at Le Mans . His best place in the overall standings was fourth in 1985, which he achieved in a Porsche 956C belonging to John Fitzpatrick's team . His partners were David Hobbs and Jo Gartner .
Today Edwards focuses on youth development and helps young drivers find sponsors .
Personal
Guy Edwards' son, Sean Edwards , who died in an accident in 2013 , was also a racing driver. In 2013 he played his father in the feature film Rush - Alles für die Sieg .
