The 1974 Belgian Grand Prix took place on May 12th at the Complexe Européen de Nivelles-Baulers and was the fifth race of the 1974 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
For the second time after 1972 , the Belgian Grand Prix was held in Nivelles .
Differences compared to the list of participants in the previous Spanish Grand Prix resulted from the absence of Chris Amon , who had decided to revise his own design before the next race, and from the fact that the second cockpit of the Frank Williams Racing Cars team was occupied by Gijs van Lennep instead of Tom Belsø .
In addition, several drivers made their debut in Formula 1 this weekend. These were Tom Pryce in the new Token Racing team , Gérard Larrousse in a privately entered Brabham BT42, Leo Kinnunen at the wheel of a Surtees customer vehicle and Teddy Pilette , the Bernie Ecclestone with extensive sponsorship money was able to convince him to provide him with a third works Brabham for this race . After Vern Schuppan had already been under contract as a substitute driver at BRM for two years and had waited in vain for a Grand Prix race there, he signed with Team Ensign as a new works driver and thus became the fifth debutant of the weekend.
This resulted in the most extensive entry list for several years with 32 participants. Since 31 drivers could be approved for the race, only one of the pilots who had traveled had to fear for his participation.
training
With a training best time more than a second faster than the runner-up Jody Scheckter in the new Tyrrell , Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni clearly achieved pole position. The time differences between the pursuers were much closer. Niki Lauda in the second Ferrari 312B3 shared the second row of the grid with Emerson Fittipaldi in the McLaren M23 .
This was followed by Ronnie Peterson in the Lotus 76 ahead of Arturo Merzario , who again showed a convincing training performance with the Iso-Marlboro, which is actually considered to be inferior.
Local hero Jacky Ickx struggled with the still troubled Lotus 76 and only achieved 16th place on the grid. The training for Carlos Reutemann , who only qualified for 24th place in the Brabham factory, was also disappointing .
Leo Kinnunen failed at the qualification hurdle and had to postpone his GP debut.
run
Regazzoni took the lead from pole position ahead of Scheckter and Fittipaldi. Between the latter, there was a change of position during the first lap. Ronnie Peterson followed ahead of Niki Lauda, James Hunt , Carlos Pace , Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Arturo Merzario.
In the course of the third lap, Lauda passed both Peterson and Scheckter into third place. After that, the order of the top placed remained constant for several laps until they ran into the first stragglers who had to be lapped. In the course of this, Lauda lost so much time that Scheckter was able to regain third position, which he lost again to the Austrian seven laps later.
Peterson had to go to the pit because of a brake failure. Regazzoni now also had a problem at the front with an opponent to be lapped, which forced him to take an evasive maneuver on the meadow. This enabled Fittipaldi to take the lead. Lauda also managed to get past Regazzoni into second place.
Due to the failures of James Hunt and Patrick Depailler , Jean-Pierre Beltoise and Denis Hulme got into the points. They were both overtaken by Mike Hailwood in the meantime , but shortly before the end of the race he fell back to seventh place due to lack of fuel. Also due to a shortage of fuel, Regazzoni lost a previously safe podium position in the last lap.
Due to a mishap, Emerson Fittipaldi almost lost the victory to Niki Lauda in the last meters. The Brazilian mistook the start line for the finish line and took off the gas too early. When crossing the actual finish line, Fittipaldi just happened to have a few meters ahead of the approaching Austrian.
