Token was a British Formula 1 team that entered four Grand Prix races in the 1974 season and started three times. It couldn't get any championship points.

history

Originally, the previous owner Ron Dennis planned to bring his Formula 2 team Rondel to the start for the 1974 season in Formula 1, but this failed due to the withdrawal of main sponsor Motul due to the oil crisis in 1973 . Dennis had already commissioned the development of a chassis, but had to sell the team shortly afterwards. The new team owners Tony Vlassopoulo and Ken Grob called the team from now on tokens, composed of the first syllable of their first names. With a Cosworth engine, Pirelli tires and Shell as the main sponsor, they entered Formula 1. The chassis designation was "RJ02" after the initials of designer Ray Jessop.

As a driver was Tom Pryce , who previously in the British Formula 5000 launched obliged. The team competed for the first time in the fifth race of the season, the Belgian Grand Prix in Nivelles-Baulers . Pryce qualified 20th out of 32 participants, but retired from the race due to a collision with Jody Scheckter in the Tyrrell. An application was also made for the Monaco Grand Prix , but FISA rejected it due to Pryce's inexperience. As a result, the Welsh left the team towards Shadow .

The next Grand Prix that Token took part in was at Brands Hatch , UK . The new driver was David Purley , who had already contested four Formula 1 races in the previous season. He failed by one place in the qualification with the 26th of 34 starting places and then left the team again.

The two subsequent races in Germany and Austria should already be the last in the team's short history. The British Formula 1 newcomer Ian Ashley was used as the pilot . On the demanding Nordschleife , Ashley qualified in 26th for last place on the grid and was able to leave six drivers behind. Ashley was now in eighth place but lost a tire and had to go halfway on three wheels before making a two-minute pit stop . He reached the finish line in 14th and last, one lap behind. At the Austrian Grand Prix, where Ashley qualified 25th, tire problems occurred during the race that forced him to make two pit stops. With eight laps behind, he was not classified.

After these disappointing incidents, Ashley's sponsors withdrew and the team had to retire due to lack of funds. The car was used the next year at Safir Engineering for the Race of Champions and the BRDC International Trophy .
