The 1950 Belgian Grand Prix took place on June 18 at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Spa and was the fifth race of the 1950 World Automobile Championship .

background

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit has been modified for the Grand Prix. The course only had one slow curve - La Sorce, which is still used today - all other curves have been straightened and the roadway widened.

training

On the extremely fast course, the three Alfa Romeo were even more favored than in the other races. So it was no surprise that they formed the front row of the grid, with Farina on pole position - thanks to a time of 4: 37.0 min, which was the same as that of Fangio , but which was driven earlier. Alberto Ascari appeared for the first time with the uncharged 4.5l Ferrari , but was only able to secure the seventh time. Team mate Villoresi in a 1.5 liter Ferrari with a supercharger was 2 seconds faster and secured a place in the second row.

run

As expected, Fangio and Farina immediately took the lead at the start. However, Villoresi managed to oust Fagioli from third place for one lap. Raymond Sommer was the best non-Alfa Romeo and initially displaced Villoresi from fourth place and even took the lead for 5 laps when the Alfa Romeo had to pit one after the other to refuel. The high fuel consumption was the Achilles heel of the otherwise vastly superior vehicles; unlike the competition, they had to refuel twice during a Grand Prix. So it happened that Sommer was still ahead of the third Alfa Romeo when his engine broke on lap 20. However, the triple success believed to be certain was lost in the final laps when Farina had to start the pit with falling oil pressure and was caught by Rosier.
