The 34th Indianapolis 500 took place on May 30, 1950 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and was the third round of the 1950 Automobile World Championship .
background
In the first 11 years (1950–1960) of the automobile world championship, the 500 miles from Indianapolis were part of the driver’s championship. However, this had no significant influence on the racing events on either side. Hardly a European driver showed up in Indianapolis and vice versa. Even the dates of the races usually did not allow mutual starts.
training
The qualification mode of the Indianapolis 500 miles differs considerably from the usual procedures in Europe. A total of 76 drivers tried to qualify for the 33 starting positions. On the first day of qualification, May 13th, Walt Faulkner set a new lap record (218.892 km / h), which secured him the pole position. The second best time was secured by Cecil Green (213.898 km / h), but he only started from 12th place on the grid because he set his time on another qualifying day.
Race course
At the start the weather was overcast but dry. The fastest in training Faulkner won the start, but Rose returned as the leader from the first lap . Faulkner fell back to fourth place. The best start came from Russo , who started from the seventh row and was in fourth place after 8 laps. On lap 10, Johnnie Parsons took the lead from Rose and initially pulled away from the field. In the 33rd lap, Rose was able to catch up again and even take the lead for one lap. After that Parsons was back in front and extended the lead to 5 seconds. In the positions behind, Jack McGrath started a chase that led him to second place, past Rose. When Parsons stopped for the first time on lap 105, he was followed by McGrath and Rose so that Bill Holland took the lead. During Rose's pit stop, his vehicle caught fire as fuel dripped onto the hot exhaust. But the fire could be extinguished quickly. Rose was uninjured and was even able to continue the race. Before it stopped, Parsons was able to overtake Holland again. After that the weather deteriorated noticeably and the first raindrops forced McGrath to spin around turn 3. The race management was forced to abandon the race. Only Parsons was able to complete the 138th lap and thus won the shortened race ahead of Holland and Rose by one lap.
