Walt Faulkner (born February 16, 1920 in Tell , Texas , † April 22, 1956 on the West Coast Speedway , California ) was an American racing driver .

Career

Walt Faulkner was a regular on the AAA National Series and NASCAR in the 1950s . In 1950 he was the first rookie to take pole position at the Indianapolis 500 .

Since the 500 miles from Indianapolis were part of the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960 , Faulkner also took part in five world championship races. In 1955 he finished fifth, shared the cockpit with Bill Homeier (driver changes were allowed at the time) and scored a championship point.

Walt Faulkner had a fatal accident in a USAC stock car race in California in April 1956 .
