Mille Miglia 1954

The 21st Mille Miglia , also called the 21st edizione Mille Miglia , took place on May 1st and 2nd, 1954 and was the third round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Before the race
As in 1953 , the Mille Miglia was also part of the sports car world championship in 1954 . The season started on January 24th with the Buenos Aires 1000km race . On the Autódromo Juan y Oscar Gálvez won Giuseppe Farina and Umberto Maglioli on a Ferrari 375 Plus for the Scuderia Ferrari . The following Sebring 12 hour race was won by Bill Lloyd and Stirling Moss in an OSCA MT4 1450 reported by Briggs Cunningham .
The race
New routing
For the past four years, the distance of the Mille Miglia has been exactly 1000 miles. The 1954 modification paid homage to Tazio Nuvolari . The popular racing driver, who celebrated his great successes in motorsport in the 1930s, died in his hometown of Mantua in August of the previous year . On the way back to the starting point and destination of Brescia , the route turned in Cremona to Mantua and came back to the original route at Montichiari . This increased the distance from 1512 to 1597 kilometers.
As further respect for the great racing driver Nuvolari, who won the Mille Miglia twice, in 1930 and 1933 , the Gran Primo Nuvolari was held for the first time. The resulting trophy was awarded to the driver who drove the fastest route from Cremona to Brescia.
Teams and Manufacturers
Before the race, the organizing committee astonished many drivers with the announcement that it was now allowed to drive the entire race distance without changing drivers. Hardly any of the top drivers, who compulsorily contested the long race distance without a change, knew of a rule that had previously prohibited this. Many of the passengers also had functions other than driving. The photographer Louis Klemantaski , who was Reg Parnell's passenger in the Aston Martin DB3 in 1953 , was supposed to take photos while driving. The task of Alfons Rolfo, the co-driver of Giovanni Bracco on his victory drive in 1952 , was limited to lighting the master's cigarettes while driving and handing him a glass of brandy every now and then. To put an end to the confusion, the committee clarified the change in the regulations. It was now permitted to contest the entire race as a soloist without a co-driver.
The absence of the factory teams of Alfa Romeo and Jaguar a duel between was Lancia and the Scuderia Ferrari predicts. After the disappointment of the previous year, when all of the works cars failed, Jaguar decided not to participate in the Mille Miglia. Alfa Romeo was still at the top last year. Juan Manuel Fangio in the Alfa Romeo 6C30 only had to admit defeat to the new darling of Italian sport, Gianni Marzotto in the factory Ferrari 340 MM Vignale . At the end of 1953, Alfa had stopped working as a factory, but a large number of Alfa Romeo vehicles were reported. The majority were Alfa Romeo 1900 , driven mainly by private drivers.
In the class of sports cars over 2 liters, in which the contenders for the overall victory were, Lancia registered four D24s under the leadership of Vittorio Jano . After the D20 and D23 , the D24 was the third sports car in a series of designs by Jano's Lancia design department. For the D24, the chassis of the D23 was revised in 1953, it was now shorter and lighter. The V6 engine was drilled out to 3.3 liters and developed 265 hp or 198 kW. Four top Italian pilots were signed up at the time. Led by Luigi Villoresi , this team of four included Piero Taruffi , Luigi Valenzano and the young Eugenio Castellotti . Alberto Ascari , who was contractually bound to Lancia, had refused a start. His deep dislike of the 1000 mile race was well known. However, after a serious training accident at Villoresi's, Ascari had to take his place.
The big opponents of Lancia were the Ferrari factory cars of the Scuderia. Giuseppe Farina and Umberto Maglioli were each entrusted with a Ferrari 375 Plus . Last year's winner Gianni Marzotto drove another 375 Plus. His two brothers Paolo and Vittorio were registered on a 375MM and a 500 Mondial , respectively . Record winner Clemente Biondetti played his last Mille Miglia . Born in Buddusò in 1898 , the Sarde won in 1938 , 1947 , 1948 and 1949 and reported a Ferrari 250 MM Vignale . Biondetti died of cancer in February of the following year.
Seven Iso Isettas were hidden deep in the crowd of private drivers . The fastest of them crossed the finish line in 176th place overall. The driving time of 22: 04: 52,000 hours would have been seventh overall at the first Mille Miglia in 1927 .
The course of the race
The Lancia D24 dominated the race from the start in Brescia. Piero Taruffi was in the lead in the early stages before team-mates Ascari and Castellotti. Taruffi was already 48 years old at the time of the race and, for many observers, had reached the zenith of his career. Fast laps from a standing start had never been his thing, but in long distance races his technical understanding and elegant, confident driving style came into their own. Taruffi was always very determined, especially at the Mille Miglia. His big goal was to win this race one day. Taruffi drove record times on the way to Pescara in order to continuously expand his lead. Ferrari suffered a first retirement shortly after the start. Giuseppe Farina had a serious accident. The automobile world champion from 1950 broke his arm. However, he did not think of resigning. A few weeks later he contested the Belgian Grand Prix with a cast on his hand .
Just before Rome , Castellotti dropped out with a fault in the power transmission and at the turning point in the Italian capital, Taruffi was in the lead with 4 minutes ahead of Ascari. Ascari, who had resisted a start so far, had driven a careful race so far. Acting with the least risk, he spared the material entrusted to him, as always, but could not really be shaken off. Behind the factory Ascari Ferrari were Umberto Maglioli and Paolo Marzotto, followed by Peter Collins plant - Aston Martin DB3S .
Taruffi drove without any problems on the way back north and already looked like the sure winner. Halfway between Rome and the destination, he miscalculated when overtaking a slower competitor, got off the track and had to give up. Again there was no chance of victory and with Ascari a driver who actually didn't want to start won. One of the most violent duels in Mille Miglia history broke out behind him in the last few hours. Vittorio Marzotto and Luigi Musso in the Maserati A6GCS fought a fight on bend and break, which Vittorio Marzotto, who drove the best race of his life, won with a nine second lead after 12 hours driving time.
Hans Herrmann and the railway barriers
The two Germans Hans Herrmann and Herbert Linge achieved an impressive sixth place overall in the Porsche 550 Spyder , which was synonymous with a class win. While the result soon became unimportant, another experience of the two pilots remained for many decades. When the railway barriers for the approaching express train to Rome were closed at the last moment in front of the Porsche, Herrmann could no longer brake. He and his co-driver Herbert Linge ducked into the cockpit of the flat Porsche Spyder, and the car drove under the barriers just before the train.
