Mille Miglia 1950
The 17th Mille Miglia , also Mille Miglia, Brescia-Roma-Brescia , took place on April 23 and 24, 1950 and led over 1,645 km from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia.
The race
Serious accidents
After the interruption caused by the Second World War and its reintroduction in 1948 , the organizers had declared the Mille Miglia more or less an open race in 1949 . Basically, every starter had to show either an international or a national Italian driver license in order to participate in the event. The organizers also issued licenses when registering for the race. As a result, the group of starters who started their road vehicles without any racing experience grew bigger and bigger. The result were many accidents, three of which were fatal. As a possible participant, you could get a start number without specifying the driver and vehicle; this resulted in the number of record entries of 487. 378 teams ultimately entered the race; that was also a record.
Aldo Bassi had a fatal accident just 15 minutes after the start, just two kilometers from his home town of Calcinato . Bassi shared the cockpit of a Ferrari 166MM Barchetta Touring with Aldo Berardi . Near Lonato del Garda , the Ferrari got off the road and hit a tree. Both drivers were seriously injured. While Bassi succumbed to serious injuries a little later in a hospital in Brescia, Berardi survived the accident. Antonio Torta, Egidio Salvati's co-driver, also died as a result of an accident. After an accident with the Fiat in which Salvati was behind the wheel, both drivers were taken to hospital with injuries. Torta succumbed to severe head injuries three days after the race.
The third death concerned the Englishman Peter Monkhouse, who was born in Beaconsfield in 1912 . Only half an hour after Bassi and Berardi's accident, the Healey Silverstone, which was driven by PAH Wood at the time, had an accident. The accident occurred on the highway between Vicenza and Padua at the same point where the Italian Prince Raimondo Lanza di Trabia was injured in an incident a few minutes earlier. Like Torta, Monkhouse died of head and neck injuries.
Teams and drivers
After Gioacchino Colombo returned to Alfa Romeo , Aurelio Lampredi also took over work on the racing engines for the sports cars at Scuderia Ferrari . The V12 engine , which was used in the various 195 racing types , developed 180 hp (132 kW) at 7000 rpm. The start of the four Marzotto brothers for the Ferrari brand was unique, two of them for the works team and two for the private Scuderia Marzotto . Gianni Marzotto and Vittorio Marzotto drove works cars; Paolo Marzotto and Umberto Marzotto for the family team. Gianni started with the Ferrari 195 Sport Touring Berlinetta Le Mans , Vittorio with a Ferrari 195S Barchetta Touring . Scuderia Marzotto reported two 166MM Barchetta Touring. Another 195S from the works team went to Dorino Serafini . A special project was the Ferrari 275S . A 12-cylinder engine with a displacement of 4.1 liters was installed in a 195S chassis. The Berlinetta body came from Touring . The two 275S were piloted by Alberto Ascari and Luigi Villoresi .
The Scuderia's big opponent was Alfa Romeo. The Milan-based company had returned to motorsport at the end of the 1940s and dominated the Formula 1 races in 1950 . Alfa Romeo came to the Mille Miglia with four different motorized vehicles, which were driven by Juan Manuel Fangio , Franco Rol , Consalvo Sanesi and Felice Bonetto .
The course of the race
The pouring rain that set in with the start of the first vehicle in Brescia favored closed vehicles. Gianni Marzotto won with a lead of almost five minutes on his team-mate Dorino Serafini. Third was Juan Manuel Fangio in the factory Alfa-Romeo. The victory of Italian Giovanna Maria Cornaggia Medici in the racing class for touring cars over 1.1 liter is also remarkable .
