The 24th Mille Miglia took place on May 11th and 12th, 1957 and was the third race of the sports car world championship of that year.

Before the race

Even before the races of earlier years, there had been considerable criticism of the organizers of the Mille Miglia, which also flared up again in the weeks before the 1000 miles in 1957. The safety of drivers and spectators was once again the focus. It was impossible to adequately secure all dangerous parts of the route on the entire route from Brescia to Rome and back. The abundance of starters was also criticized in advance. In 1955 the race was opened to private drivers, who competed in large numbers, especially in the small classes. In addition, the upgraded Ferrari and Maserati racing cars , such as the Ferrari 315S and 335S and the Maserati 450S, were far too fast to race on public roads. The Ferrari 335S had a 390 hp V12 engine and reached a top speed of 305 km / h. The Maserati was similarly powerful.

In the order of the races of the Sports Car World Championship 1957 , the Mille Miglia was the third valuation run. The season began at the end of January with the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , which ended with the victory of Masten Gregory , Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso in the Ferrari 290MM registered by the US Scuderia Temple Buel . The second race of the season at Sebring was won by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jean Behra in the factory Maserati 450S.

The race

The 1957 Mille Miglia entered its final phase when Alfonso de Portago had a fatal accident . Even before the race, the atmosphere inside Scuderia Ferrari was explosive like seldom before. Enzo Ferrari entrusted the fast Belgian Olivier Gendebien with the agile, but poorly performing 250 GT SWB . De Portago drove the 335 Sport, only four of which were built. This model had a 4.1 liter, 12 cylinder engine with four camshafts. Gendebien was supposed to drive the car and was annoyed by Enzo Ferrari's decision. With the GT, he had no chance of overall victory.

Until Rome, Peter Collins dominated the race in another Ferrari 335 Sport. De Portago drove with remarkable discipline and was already three minutes behind Gendebien in the 3-liter GT at the turn in Rome. Collins had achieved an unusually high average speed of 190.5 km / h on the flat stretches between Brescia and Verona, but the old rule "If you lead in Rome, you won't win the Mille Miglia" was to come true in 1957 as well. At the checkpoint there was a scene that the paparazzi couldn't have imagined better. When de Portago was about to start again, a beautiful woman broke away from the crowd. The American actress Linda Christian ran towards the car, de Portago stood in his driver's seat, kissed the lady and raced away with spinning wheels to the cheers of the audience.

It began to snow on the heights of the Apennines . De Portago and co-driver Nelson got through the snowstorm without any problems. Not until just before Bologna did the Ferrari hit the curb a few times on the wet road, but without any visible damage to the vehicle. At the last refueling stop in Bologna, de Portago was only fifth. Enzo Ferrari was there and incited de Portago to drive faster. It could not be that Gendebien is clearly ahead of him with the GT. In addition, the Belgian has a problem with the transverse axis and would probably not reach the destination in Brescia. Incidentally , the underbody of Piero Taruffi's car , who had constantly worked his way up to Collins, was grinding. Taruffi must slow down. Only Collins seemed unbeatable.

The eagerly awaited duel between Ferrari and Maserati did not materialize. Stirling Moss had to park his Maserati 450 S after twelve kilometers with a broken brake pedal. Peter Collins, again with the photographer Louis Klemantaski as co-driver, pulverized all previous records as far as Bologna. Almost 200 kilometers from the finish line, he had to give up after a differential damage. Now the big hour struck for 51-year-old Piero Taruffi. Taruffi, who was able to achieve his first podium place as early as 1933, dragged his ailing 315 sport with "kid gloves" to his first victory, in his thirteenth participation, to Brescia . His team colleague Wolfgang von Trips stopped attacking him in the last few kilometers, but instead gave him victory thanks to his considerate driving style.

The de Portago accident

When de Portago was about to tackle the last stage, a mechanic discovered a problem with the left front wheel. A low-lying wishbone was bent and the tire scraped against the body. A new set of Englebert tires rolled in, but de Portago waved his hand and drove on.

De Portago drove incredible times on the flat stretch towards Mantua. The 335 easily ran 280 km / h on the straight and de Portago drove the Ferrari north at top speed. Before Parma he passed the collapsed Ferrari with engine failure. On the endlessly long avenues there were only Taruffi, Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips and Gendebien in front of him. Before Cerlango the road became more curvy, after leaving town there was a five-kilometer straight to Guidizzolo.

De Portago arrived at full throttle when the car hit a milestone on the left and got out of control. The Ferrari hit the side of a telegraph pole, turned on its own axis and hit an embankment on the right with full force. De Portago had no chance of slowing down the rotating car. As always, thousands of spectators lined the route. Tragically, right at the scene of the accident, a group of locals with their children were standing very close to the narrow strip of asphalt when the Ferrari came to rest right there. There were eleven dead: de Portago died of the terrible cuts that the loose bonnet inflicted on him. His passenger and nine local residents, including five children, died as a result of the accident. 20 other people were injured, some seriously.

Already hours after the race there was strong criticism. The Corriere della Sera headlined in its evening edition with the headline: The Mille Miglia, cemetery for babies and men, Basta . The Vatican was also in a state of excitement. Within a few hours there were enough votes in Rome in the Chamber of Deputies and in the Senate to speak out in favor of banning the competition forever. The media also quickly found the culprit for the tragedy: Enzo Ferrari.

The responsibility lay more with the organizer than with the owner of the racing team. The Mille Miglia claimed ten lives in Bologna as early as 1938 when a Lancia Aurelia skidded on the tram tracks and spun into the audience. In 1954 , the rule that only production touring cars were allowed to take part in the event was relaxed. From then on, the race was dominated by pure sports cars, some of which sped through the area at almost 300 km / h.

Regardless, Enzo Ferrari was not only denounced, but also charged by the judiciary. An excerpt from the written justification: Enzo Ferrari, born in Modena on February 20, 1898 and also resident here, is accused of negligent homicide and serious bodily harm because, as the owner of the Ferrari company in Modena, he specializes in the construction of road and racing cars, at the 24th Mille Miglia for the cars of his Scuderia, in particular for the car with the registration number BO 81825 and the start number 531, driven by Alfonso Cabeza de Vaca, Marquis de Portago, tires of the company Englebert in Liège (Belgium), which in terms of their design features and intended use were not suitable for use in the cars mentioned, which develop a maximum speed of not less than 280 km / h under full load, while the aforementioned tires have a maximum speed of one speed allowed from 220 km / h; and because the tires got too hot because of the high air pressure, damaging the center of the tread, bursting the whole tire and knocking the car off the road, killing nine spectators and both drivers .

Ferrari's passport was withheld and the trial lasted four years before he was acquitted of all charges. If one could blame Ferrari at all, it was that he allowed de Portago to continue driving the obviously damaged vehicle after he had, at least indirectly, incited him to catch up with Gendebien. Moral questions that no court could resolve.

This was followed by the complete public withdrawal of the company owner. Ferrari never came to a race. Only in Monza was he occasionally seen training for the Italian Grand Prix.

The racing event itself was last held in this form in 1957.
