Pierre Chancel (born May 24, 1920 in Paris , † March 31, 2000 in Salers ) was a French racing driver .

Career

Pierre Chancel and his brother Robert started motorsport shortly after the Second World War . Pierre Chancel wrote motorsport history when he drove a 744 cm³ Panhard on the steep curve race track of Montlhéry in December 1954 at 210.880 km / h.

Chancel worked as a mechanic, drove motorcycle races and made his debut at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1950 . His first partner was his compatriot Raymond Gaillard , with whom he shared the steering of a Callista Panhard. In total, Pierre Chancel competed at Le Mans nine times.

He celebrated his greatest success in this endurance race in 1953. With his brother Robert as a partner, he drove a Panhard X88 . This small racing car with a displacement of only 611 cm³ had excellent driving characteristics, which resulted from an extremely aerodynamic body. The brothers finished 21st overall with a Panhard and won the Coupe Biennal and the index ranking.
