1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1957
The third 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also known as the 1000 km Nürburgring , took place on May 25, 1957 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
In 1957, the ADAC held a long- distance race at the Nürburgring for the third time, with a distance of 1000 kilometers. This event took place for the first time in 1953 and, like the second race in 1956, was part of the sports car world championship.
Until the race in the Eifel, the 1957 season was marked by the duel between the Ferrari and Maserati racing teams . The first race of the year, the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , was won by Masten Gregory , Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso in a Ferrari. In Sebring , the success went to Maserati, while at the Mille Migla Ferrari was again successful. There was a fatal accident there with serious consequences. The Spanish Ferrari driver Alfonso de Portago came off the track just before the finish in the Ferrari 335S , where he, his co-driver and nine spectators were killed.
At the Nürburgring, Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips had an accident during training in the Breidscheid section because the pedal arrangement in the Ferrari 250 GT he had briefly driven was different from that in the racing car and he mistook the brakes and accelerator. Like some Grand Prix cars in the past, this GT had the gas pedal in the middle. Trips was hospitalized with bruises and fractures of the first and second lumbar vertebrae and was unable to take part in the race. The fastest in training was Stirling Moss , who drove a time of 9: 49.900 minutes in the Maserati 450S . With an average of 139.203 km / h, it remained well below the 10-minute limit. At the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Germany in August , Juan Manuel Fangio was a lot faster in the Maserati 250F with a time of 9: 25.600. The factory Maserati dominated the race at the beginning. Moss lost a bike on lap 9 and had to retire. His team-mate Fangio then switched to Harry Schell's car and was eliminated on lap 19. This time an oil leak caused the premature stop. Both drove the race in 300S by Paco Godia over and still reached the fifth place overall. The victory surprisingly went to Tony Brooks and Noël Cunningham-Reid in the Aston Martin DBR1 / 300 , who were able to distance the works Ferrari by more than four minutes.
The Porsche brand was represented at the factory with two Porsche 550 RS . There were also three private teams with the same type and other teams with 14 Porsche 356 A Carrera and four Porsche 356 A. Edgar Barth , who had meanwhile moved to West Germany, and Umberto Maglioli in the works Porsche 550 RS won with 44 laps in 7: 47.17.3 hours or with an average speed of 128.867 km / h the sports car class up to 1.5 liters and finished fourth in the overall standings. The Porsche 356 B Carrera reported by the Schorndorf car dealer Paul-Ernst Strähle (1927-2010) and driven by him together with Paul Denk won the GT class up to 1.6 liters and reached 24th place in the overall ranking. Only three of the 23 Porsches retired.
