William Archibald "Archie" Scott-Brown (born May 13, 1927 in Paisley , † May 19, 1958 in Heusy , Belgium ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Archie Scott-Brown had a fatal accident in one of these Lister Jaguars in 1958

Archie Scott-Brown had a very difficult childhood. His mother contracted measles during pregnancy and Scott-Brown was born with severe deformities in his right hand and both legs and feet. The result was martyrdom for the baby and the young boy. He had to endure no fewer than 22 operations in the 1930s. Scott-Brown never lost his courage to face life. On the contrary; he went to the British merchant navy and spent the Second World War as a seaman .

Scott-Brown came to racing in 1950. First he took part in small racing events with an MG TD. This would last until 1954, when his career gained momentum. He met Brian Lister and they forged a perfect partnership. Lister built the racing cars and Scott-Brown drove them. In 1955 he won one sports car race after another with the Lister - Bristol across the country . The successes were so evident that the Connaught team management offered him a works car for the 1956 British Grand Prix . Even during training, the Scot astonished the experts when he put the Connaught Type B in tenth training rank. In the race he was about to get to the top when he lost a wheel after a broken axle and had to give up the race. When he finished second in the International Trophy , the specialist press raved about a new British world-class driver. Juan Manuel Fangio spoke in an interview about Scott-Brown's phenomenal vehicle control.

In 1957 he was supposed to start again at the British Grand Prix for BRM , but after a few test drives he turned down the offer and stayed with Lister to continue racing.

Despite all the successes on the island, he did not get an international license and could not race in continental Europe for the time being. Scott-Brown evaded to New Zealand and promptly won the Wigan Trophy . When he finally got his license, the first important race ended in a fatal accident. In a sports car race in Spa-Francorchamps , he lost control of his Lister Jaguar in a duel with Masten Gregory . The car rolled over into a field and went up in flames. Scott-Brown died of serious injuries a day later.
