RAC Tourist Trophy 1958
The 23rd RAC Tourist Trophy , also News of The World sponsor the 23rd RAC Tourist Trophy Race, Goodwood , took place on September 13, 1958 at the Goodwood Circuit and was the sixth round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.
The race
Before the RAC Tourist Trophy, the last race of the sports car world championship in 1958 , the world championship had long been decided in favor of Ferrari . After the victory of Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill in the plant - Ferrari 250 TR 58 , the Italian manufacturer was in the rating unassailable lead and decided not to compete at Goodwood.
Due to the absence of Ferrari, the three Aston Martin at the start were in the competition for the overall victory without opponents. There was an extremely close finish between the three works cars. After four hours of driving, Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks won the DBR1 / 300 with a lead of only 0.4 seconds over teammates Roy Salvadori and Jack Brabham . Another 0.4 seconds behind, Carroll Shelby and Stuart Lewis-Evans crossed the finish line in the third Aston Martin.
