Alan Stacey (born August 29, 1933 in Broomfield , Essex , † June 19, 1960 in Spa , Belgium ) was an English racing driver.
Career
Belgian Grand Prix 1960: the burned-out racing car.
Coming from a farming family, the extroverted Stacey showed great driving talent from an early age. This was all the more surprising since he suffered from a physical disability. His right leg was shorter and weaker from birth, the right lower leg was replaced by a prosthesis so that he had to ride a motorcycle-like accelerator cable .
He mastered this handicap so well that Colin Chapman provided him with a Lotus . At the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps in 1960 , in which two drivers, Stirling Moss and Michael Taylor, had already been seriously injured and Chris Bristow had already had a fatal accident, he was killed at the wheel of his Lotus 18 when a bird hit the visor of his helmet penetrated at high speed .
With two dead and two seriously injured drivers, this was one of the most tragic Formula 1 racing weekends.
