Reports

background

The Silverstone Circuit and the Aintree Circuit alternated in previous years as the venue for the British Grand Prix. This constant change ended in 1960. The race then took place twice in a row on the Aintree Circuit before the venue changed annually between the Silverstone Circuit and Brands Hatch . The last three races were won by Jack Brabham on Cooper , who led the drivers' championship ahead of teammate Bruce McLaren . Both drivers had 24 points, but Brabham won more races of the season. Before the race, all drivers still had theoretical chances of winning the drivers' title, but Brabham and McLaren had the opportunity to significantly reduce the number of possible title aspirants by placing a points, because the gap to third-placed driver Stirling Moss was already 13 points. In the constructors' championship, Cooper was clearly ahead of Lotus and had the chance to become world champion early. For this, the team only needed a higher position in the race than Lotus and Ferrari .

Since the Scarab cars did not take part in the race weekend due to major engine problems, Cooper decided to provide an old Cooper T51 for the two drivers Lance Reventlow and Chuck Daigh . Since Daigh was faster with the car in practice than Reventlow, he was allowed to compete for Cooper in the race. For Reventlow it was the last Grand Prix of his career; Daigh only drove a Cooper. It was not until the season finale, the 1960 US Grand Prix , that Scarab returned to the automobile world championship with Daigh as driver. Lotus replaced Ron Flockhart with John Surtees , who drove for the team at the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix .

Ferrari only registered two cars for the two regular drivers Phil Hill and Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips for the race . Willy Mairesse paused for two races. Aston Martin took part in the automobile world championship again and entered a new car, the Aston Martin DBR5 . The chassis of the car was identical to that of the Aston Martin DBR4 . Only the weight and size have been reduced to make the car more competitive. However, both did not work satisfactorily. The DBR5 remained in this one race and Aston Martin withdrew from the World Cup to concentrate on Aston Martin's successful sports cars in other racing series. The team drivers for the British Grand Prix were Roy Salvadori and Maurice Trintignant .

Brian Naylor drove the second race of the season in the self-constructed JBW . In addition, many drivers with private cars competed again. The Yeoman Credit Racing Team fielded three Cooper for Tony Brooks , Olivier Gendebien and Henry Taylor , the Scuderia Centro Sud two Cooper for Masten Gregory and Ian Burgess . Other private Cooper T51s were driven by Gino Munaron , Jack Fairman , Keith Greene and Lucien Bianchi . For Fairman and Greene it was the only race of the season, for Bianchi the last of the year. Bianchi didn't drive the Cooper again until 1968 when he switched to the works team. In the intervening years he drove various other private cars. In addition, David Piper drove his last Grand Prix with a Lotus 16 for the Robert Bodle Ltd. team . . With Moss, Brabham and Brooks, three former winners of the race took part; Ferrari and Cooper were previously successful with the designers. Ferrari has won the last six Grands Prix at the Silverstone Circuit, none of the drivers had won on this circuit before.

training

Furthermore, Brabham was dominant in training. With one second ahead of the competition, he secured the third pole position in a row. For Cooper it was the fourth of the season. In second place on the grid, Graham Hill qualified on one of the BRMs , which were more competitive on the Silverstone Circuit than in previous races. Graham Hill's teammates also qualified for the front starting positions, with Jo Bonnier fourth and Dan Gurney sixth. Brabham's team-mate McLaren started from third after having mostly started from midfield in previous races.

Best Lotus driver was Ireland in fifth place, best Ferrari driver Graf Berghe von Trips in seventh place. The top 10 were completed by Clark, Brooks and Phil Hill. Salvadori qualified the Aston Martin in 13th place, his team mate Trintignant came in 21. In the duel for the free cockpit at Cooper, Daigh was better than Reventlow and therefore took part in the race for the team. Reventlow, however, withdrew his entry for the Grand Prix. All drivers qualified for the race, even Munaron, who hadn't set time.

Graham Hill overtook the entire field before retiring (picture from 1969)

As at the French Grand Prix a week earlier, Graham Hill stalled the engine of his car at the start and stopped. This time all the other drivers avoided the standing BRM and Graham Hill continued the race after restarting the engine in last place. Brooks' and Taylor's two Cooper also stopped at the start, but both drivers also continued the race. Brabham won the starting duel. McLaren, Bonnier and Ireland positioned themselves behind him. The lead of two cars from the Cooper works team then only stopped for one lap. First Bonnier overtook McLaren, then Ireland passed both McLaren and Bonnier.

Graham Hill, who was in 22nd place after the first lap, started a chase that brought him to the top during the course of the race. Graham Hill overtook four cars on lap two and three, and two more overtaking maneuvers on lap four put him in twelfth place. While at the head of the field Brabham increased his lead over the competition, Graham Hill made up two more places and improved to tenth. He then dueled several rounds with Phil Hill. On lap 12 there was the first retirement of the race: Greene parked his car because of overheating. After Graham Hill had also overtaken Phil Hill, he improved by further places in the following laps. The duels for these positions became more difficult. It took Graham Hill eight laps to overtake Bonnier and another five laps to face McLaren. In the previous laps Surtees had improved to third place, but he was also overtaken by Graham Hill. The duel for victory then changed from lap 37. Graham Hill passed Ireland and was thus directly behind the leading Brabham, behind which Surtees overtook Ireland and was again third. This order lasted until lap 55, when Graham Hill caught up with Brabham and took the lead. During this phase of the race, Salvadori and Fairman retired with technical defects, Daigh's car overheated and Burgess suffered an engine failure. On lap 59, the suspension of Bonnier's car broke and Bianchi's engine failure was also the reason for the failure three laps later.

Graham Hill, who had overtaken the entire field and was leading a Grand Prix that was part of the Automobile World Championship for the first time in his career, held a narrow lead over Brabham in the following laps. On lap 71, six laps before the end of the race, Graham Hill had problems with his brakes. When lapping two cars in front of the “Copse Corner”, he braked and spun off the track. Once again, the unreliability of the BRM P48 was the reason that the team remained without points in a race. The last remaining BRM from Gurney reached the goal, but in tenth place, three laps behind the winner Brabham. Brabham won the fourth race in a row and secured the constructors' championship for Cooper with the fifth win of the season. For the designer it was the second and last design engineer title, at the same time Cooper was the first designer to successfully defend the title. Surtees finished second and in his second race achieved the first podium in the automobile world championship. Lotus thus extended its lead over Ferrari in the constructors' championship to nine points. Both teams still had the chance to finish second in this category. Ireland completed the podium in third place ahead of McLaren and Brooks. Sixth and thus the best Ferrari driver was Graf Berghe von Trips in sixth place. The first ten were completed by Phil Hill, Taylor, Gendebien and Gurney.

In the drivers' standings, Brabham was five points ahead of his team-mate McLaren, Ireland, moving up two places to fourth, tied with Stirling Moss , who was still paused. Brabham broke Ferrari's winning streak at the Silverstone Circuit, which lasted six races, with the win, but neither he nor Cooper won another race on this track. Ferrari won another race at the Silverstone Circuit only decades later, at the 1990 British Grand Prix . Graham Hill drove the fastest lap of the race. This was the first fastest race lap of his career.
