run
First start
Michael Schumacher got off the grid very badly and fell behind Irvine to fourth, while Häkkinen was able to keep the lead ahead of Coulthard. At the start, Villeneuve and Zanardi stopped and the race management stopped the start. But the drivers were informed too late and Michael Schumacher suffered a brake defect after the hangar straight and shot head-on and almost unbraked into the tire wall. Michael Schumacher then suffered a fractured lower leg and could no longer participate in the restart.
Second start
After a break of around 15 minutes, the race started again. Irvine and Frentzen got off very well, but the latter was blocked by Coulthard and had to slow down. As a car with de la Rosa stopped again, the safety car was sent out on the track. In retrospect, however, it would not have been necessary because the car could be removed from the starting position in good time. Behind the safety car, Mika Häkkinen led ahead of Irvine, Coulthard, Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and Hill. The race was reopened on lap two, Coulthard tried to pass Irvine on the outside, but couldn't. Michael Schumacher was flown to a hospital by helicopter.
On lap 26, Häkkinen went to the pit lane to change tires and refuel. However, a wheel nut was not installed tightly enough and Häkkinen had to go to the box again the next round. On the same lap, Irvine pitted, but a bad stop with a standing time of twelve seconds cost him the lead. On lap 30 in the last corner, the left rear wheel came off the car completely and was on the track. Several drivers were able to avoid the tire by a few centimeters. The safety car was sent out, although a marshal was able to quickly collect the loose wheel. For the following lap, Villeneuve had to park the car on the home straight; here at the latest the safety car should have been on the track. Häkkinen got a new bike, but a little later Häkkinen gave up because of safety concerns. The restart took place without incident, David Coulthard continued to lead ahead of Irvine, Ralf Schumacher, Frentzen, Hill and Barrichello, Häkkinen was in 18th place. With a brief exception, David Coulthard kept the lead and thus won the British Grand Prix ahead of Irvine and Ralf Schumacher. The winner's trophy for David Coulthard was presented by John Prescott , Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Team boss Ron Dennis took over the trophy for the victorious designer McLaren from Neil Johnson , the Chief Executive Officer of the British automobile club RAC .
