The 1962 British Grand Prix took place on July 21, 1962 at the Aintree Circuit near Aintree and was the fifth race of the 1962 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
Since the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1954 , the venue for this race has changed annually between the Aintree Circuit and the Silverstone Circuit . This regular circuit change ended in 1962, for the second time in a row the Grand Prix was held on the Aintree Circuit. It was also the last race on this circuit as it was subsequently sold. After that, the Great Britain Grand Prix took place alternately at the Silverstone Circuit and Brands Hatch .
Ferrari had to skip the French Grand Prix due to a metalworking industry strike in Italy . The strike had ended, but Ferrari only managed to prepare one car for the British Grand Prix. As a driver for this Ferrari 156 was Phil Hill used. However, the vehicle was not competitive during the entire race weekend.
Jack Brabham drove a private Lotus 24 for the last time . From the German Grand Prix he used his own car, the Brabham BT3 . The Bowmaker Racing Team also reported a Lola Mk4A for John Surtees . However, Surtees drove the previous car, the Lola Mk4, in training and in the race. Ian Burgess drove his first race of the season for the debut team Anglo-American Equipe on a Cooper T53 Special . Tony Settember made his debut race for Emeryson Cars on an Emeryson 1004 . Wolfgang Seidel qualified for a Grand Prix for the last time in his career, Jay Chamberlain and Tony Shelly the only time. All three drivers failed further attempts to qualify for subsequent races. Shelly drove for John Dalton , as did Keith Greene . Since John Dalton only had one car available, Shelly received the Lotus 18 for the race, Greene was allowed to drive in practice. Maurice Trintignant paused a race because his car was still damaged after the accident in France. Siffert did not start after he could not raise the entry fee for the Grand Prix.
With Brabham, a former winner took part in the race, with the constructors Ferrari had previously been successful seven times and Cooper twice. Graham Hill was ahead of Phil Hill and Bruce McLaren in the drivers 'championship, and BRM was ahead of Cooper and Lotus in the constructors' championship . A week before the race, there was a Grand Prix that was not part of the automobile world championship, the Solitude Grand Prix , which Dan Gurney won in a Porsche .
training
For the second time in a row and for the third time this season, Jim Clark took pole position on a Lotus . He was half a second faster than the runner-up Surtees on Lola. Third was Innes Ireland , who drove for the UDT Laystall Racing Team . McLaren took fourth place ahead of Graham Hill and Gurney. Thus, six different teams were represented in the first six positions on the grid. Jo Bonnier qualified in seventh place behind his team-mate, Richie Ginther on BRM finished eighth ahead of Brabham and Trevor Taylor . Phil Hill, with the only Ferrari in the field, was twelfth and was more than two seconds slower than Clark.
run
At the start Ireland had problems with the gearbox and lost a lot of places so that Clark took the lead; Surtees was second. Behind them Gurney improved to third, McLaren remained fourth. Brabham also won several positions at the start, overtook Graham Hill and was fifth. Graham Hill passed Brabham a few laps later to regain the position. At the front there were no more duels to change positions for the rest of the race. Clark extended his lead on Surtees to more than a minute and kept it steady. Gurney fell several places down due to a defect, so McLaren was the new third ahead of Graham Hill and Brabham.
On the sixth lap of the race, Shelly retired with an engine failure. Seidel's brakes failed on lap 11 and Bonnier parked his car on lap 27 with a defective differential. Again Roy Salvadori retired on Lola, he remained without a finish this season. Phil Hill, whose car was not fast enough to score points for Ferrari, suffered an engine failure on lap 47 and also retired early.
In a largely uneventful race, Clark dominated and won the Grand Prix with a 49-second lead over Surtees. In addition to pole position and victory, Clark set the fastest race lap and led the entire race. With this he achieved his first Grand Slam . After there were previously four different winners in four races, he was also the first driver to win two Grand Prix in 1962. For him this was the start of a series of four victories in a row at the British Grand Prix. Surtees reached a podium for the second time in his career, having finished second in the 1960 British Grand Prix on Lotus. It was the first podium for the designer Lola. McLaren finished third and Graham Hill fourth. Brabham finished fifth, one lap behind, and Tony Maggs was sixth. The other places within the rating were occupied by Gregory, Taylor, Gurney and Jackie Lewis .
In the drivers' championship, Graham Hill retained the lead by one point from Clark, who moved up two positions. McLaren stayed in third place, three points behind Graham Hill. Overall, however, the first five drivers were still very close and each driver still had the theoretical chance of winning the title. In the constructors' championship, too, the gaps between the constructors were small, Lotus took the lead and was one point ahead of BRM. Third was Cooper, three points behind.
