history

Frankenlust

Frankenlust was founded as a settlement colony in 1848 by the pastor Ferdinand Sievers (1816–1893) and 14 immigrants from Franconia , sent by Ludwig Adolf Petri . They built log cabins and the Evangelical Lutheran St. Paul Church and worked the land for agricultural use. The first church was completed in 1849 in the style of a log cabin. It was replaced by a timber frame structure in 1857 . The place was initially assigned to the Kochville Township. In 1880, the boundaries of the county were changed so that the place was henceforth part of Bay County instead of Saginaw County . At the request of the settlers, the place was called Frankenlust Township from 1881. The administration building was completed in 1977. In 2000 there were 2530 people in Frankenlust Township, around 96% of them white.

Amelith

Amelith was founded near Frankenlust in 1848 when the father-in-law of the pastor of Frankenlust, Friedrich Carl Ludwig Koch , bought around 2000 acres of land there, which was then settled. The settlers came from Koch's environment. Pastor Sievers founded the ev.-luth there in 1851/52. Johanneskirche and married Koch's daughter Caroline. The resulting village Amelith was named after Koch's family relationship with Amelith . A memorial plaque was installed there in 2014. From 1894 to 1901 Amelith had her own post office. A local coal mine was closed around 1900, so the place kept its rural character.

Brooks

Brooks was set up as a stop by a railroad company in 1894.

University Center

These include Delta College, founded in 1961, and Saginaw Valley State University, founded as a college in 1963 and expanded in 1987.

Attractions

  • Church of St. Paul, Frankenlust. The church was consecrated in 1905 and replaced the previous one, which was built in 1857 in timber frame construction. The altar, pulpit and baptismal font come from this previous one. The church tower was struck by lightning in 1984, so that the roof, belfry and organ were destroyed and the repairs lasted until 1986. It has a cruciform floor plan.
  • St. John's Church, Amelith. The church was built in 1870 in a timber frame construction in the neo-Gothic style. It replaced a log cabin previously used as a church. A renovation was completed in 1912 and an extension in 1997. The congregation is a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod .
