The Saginaw River is a 35 kilometer (22 mi) long river in central Michigan , United States . It is formed by the confluence of the Tittabawassee River and Shiawassee River southeast of Saginaw . On its way it crosses several counties and finally flows into the Huron Sea at Essexville , north of Bay City . Due to the discharge of wastewater by Dow Chemical into the Tittabawassee River, this and the Saginaw River are increasingly polluted with dioxins . It is not yet clear whether there is a health risk for the population and is currently (2005) being investigated. The fact is, however, that the river has not frozen over in winter in recent decades due to the high chemical pollution. This has now changed for the better. Just south of Bay City, the Interstate Highway (national highway) crosses I-75 over the Zilwaukee Bridge over the Saginaw River.

fishing

It is possible to fish in the Saginaw River, but we do not recommend consuming the fish as they can contain high levels of chemicals.

shipping

At Bay City and Essexville , the Saginaw River is spanned by several lifting bridges, as large freighters travel upstream and transport gravel and other goods. A fairway has been specially dug in the river for this purpose.
