The Shiawassee River is a 180 km long river in the US state of Michigan . It drains an area totaling 8910 km². Less the catchment areas of its two main tributaries, the Flint River and Cass River , it is 3,110 km². The mean discharge at the USGS 04144500 gauge near Owosso is 10.5 m³ / s.
course
The Shiawassee River has its source in Oakland County 20 km northwest of Pontiac . It flows mainly in a northerly direction. He passes the small town of Owosso and later the village of Chesaning . The Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is located on the lower reaches . There its most important tributaries flow into the Shiawassee River: Bad River from the left, Flint River and Cass River from the right. Finally, the Shiawassee River united on the southern edge of Saginaw with the Tittabawassee River to Saginaw River .
nature and environment
At Chesaning, an old dam was replaced by a fish passage in 2009. As a result, various fish such as the eyeglasses or the sturgeon can now get from the Huron Lake to their spawning grounds in the 60 km long upstream section of the river.
