The Cass River arises at the confluence of the North Branch Cass River and South Branch Cass River near Cass City . It drains the central part of the Thumb ("Thumb"), the peninsula east of Saginaw Bay . The Cass River flows in a southwesterly direction. He passes the towns of Caro , Vassar , Frankenmuth and Bridgeport . In the lower reaches, below Frankenmuth, the Cass River flows in a westerly direction and flows into the Shiawassee River on the right-hand side on the southern outskirts of Saginaw , shortly before it joins the Tittabawassee River to form the Saginaw River .

In September 2015, a fish passage on the Cass River near Frankenmuth was completed to replace an old dam. With the completion of the construction project, 117 upstream kilometers in the river system have become accessible to the fish, where spawning grounds used to be. In the tourist town of Frankenmuth, an excursion steamer drives on the river.
