The Tittabawassee River is a 116 km long river in the US state of Michigan . It drains an area of 6400 km². The mean discharge at the USGS 04156000 gauge near Midland is 47.6 m³ / s.
course
The Tittabawassee River arises in Gladwin County at the confluence of its two headwaters, East Branch and Middle Branch Tittabawassee River . The river to Second Lake is dammed almost 7 kilometers downstream . The Tittabawassee River flows mainly in a southerly direction. The reservoirs Smallwood Lake , Lake Wixom and Sanford Lake are located along the course of the river . At the village of Sanford he turns south-southeast. In Midland, the Chippewa River joins the river from the right. On the left bank of the river, shortly before the union with the Shiawassee River to the Saginaw River , lies the southern outskirts of Saginaw.
nature and environment
In November 2006, Dow Chemical in Midland was found to be discharging dioxin-containing sewage into the Tittabawassee River. Accordingly, the fish in the lower reaches of the Tittabawassee River and the Saginaw River were contaminated with environmental toxins.
On May 19, 2020, the Edenville and Sanford dams broke after heavy rains. This flooded the downstream town of Midland. About 10,000 people had to leave their homes.
