Trojan of Saintes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trojanus von Saintes (French Troian , Troyen or Trie ; * around 480 in Saintes ; † around 533 ibid) was bishop of Saintes and the entire Saintonge .

Vita

According to tradition, Trojanus was born to a Jewish father and an Arab mother. The then bishop of the city, Pierre I, noticed the young man. After his death Trojanus was ordained bishop in 511; numerous miracles are part of his work. After his death he was buried next to his predecessors in the cathedral; however, the graves are all lost.

Adoration

Because of his virtuous way of life, Trojanus was worshiped by the faithful during his lifetime; because he was said to have healing powers, they tried to touch his robe. His feast day is December 1st, but November 30th is also mentioned. Four towns in the south of France bear his name: Saint-Trojan-les-Bains ( Île d'Oléron ), Saint-Trojan (Gironde) , Boutiers-Saint-Trojan ( Charente ) and Sainte-Trie ( Dordogne ). The former St-Trojan priory church in Rétaud is also dedicated to him.

presentation

Medieval representations of the saint are not known. On some modern glass paintings he can be seen in bishop's costume.
