Gladwin County is a county in the US state of Michigan . The county seat is Gladwin .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and has an area of 1,338 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Ogemaw County , Arenac County , Bay County , Midland County , Clare County, and Roscommon Counties .
history
Gladwin County was formed as the original Free Territory County in 1831. It was named after Henry Gladwin , a British military commander.

As of the 2000 census , Gladwin County had 26,023 people in 10,561 households and 7,614 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.65 percent white, 0.13 percent African American, 0.56 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.96 percent of the population.
Of the 10,561 households, 27.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers, and 27.9 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.85.
23.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 27.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 18.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 95.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,019 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,090. Males had a median income of $ 33,871 versus $ 21,956 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,614. 10.4 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
