Marquette County is a county in the state of Michigan in the United States . The county seat is Marquette .

The county is located in the north of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, borders Lake Superior , one of the 5 Great Lakes , and has an area of 8871 square kilometers, of which 4155 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Alger County , Delta County , Menominee County , Dickinson County , Iron County , Baraga County and, on Lake Superior, Keweenaw County .
history
Marquette County was formed in 1843 from parts of Chippewa County and Mackinac County. Like the district capital, it was named after Pere Jacques Marquette , a French Jesuit missionary.

According to the 2000 census , Marquette County had 64,634 people in 25,767 households and 16,490 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.12 percent white, 1.32 percent African American, 1.49 percent Native American, 0.49 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.31 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.69 percent of the population.
Of the 25,767 households, 28.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.3 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, and 36.0 percent were non-families. 28.9 percent were single households and 10.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 13.6 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.5 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 100.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 35,548 , and the median income for a family is $ 46,281. Males had a median income of $ 36,431 versus $ 23,609 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,070. 6.0 percent of families and 10.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
