The Trunk Line Bridge No. 1 , also known as the Peshekee River Bridge , is the first bridge built by the Michigan State Highway Department on the US-41 / M-28 . It was built in 1914 and inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 17, 1999 . The entry was made together with a number of other bridges designed by the ministry.

description

The Trunk Line Bridge No. is a multi-span concrete bridge in the west of Marquette County , about eight kilometers west of Michigamme . The bridge led US 41 / M-28 over the Pesheskee River near the mouth of the river in Lake Michigamme . It is located between a Soo Line railway bridge and the new building to the north, which is used for modern motor vehicle traffic.

The bridge is 72 m long and is composed of six box girders, each 12 m long. On top of this lies a concrete ceiling, which is lined with beam heads in full height. The girders are supported by massive concrete pillars with wide-nosed ice breakers. A total of more than 460 m³ of concrete was used.

history

The bridge can no longer be used by motorists today. It was built in 1914 and was a result of the State Trunk Line Act of 1913. This law established a state highway network in Michigan , the length of which was nearly 4,800 km. The law also said that the Michigan State Highway Department would design, build and maintain bridges that exceeded three meters in length if local authorities improved adjoining highways for at least three miles (about three miles). Marquette County built such a main road between Marquette and Michigamme near the county line in 1913 to encourage the state to build a bridge at that point. The designer of the structure was C. V. Dewart and the construction was incumbent on the Marquette-based construction company Powell and Mitchell . In the 1920s, the Peshekee River Bridge was incorporated into the course of US Highway 41.

Because of the importance of its architecture and engineering, the bridge was named “Trunk Line Bridge No. 1 ”on the National Register of Historic Places. The MDOT describes the bridge as once one of the most important vehicle bridges in Michigan. The structure was the first bridge construction of the Michigan State Highway Department in 1914. It was replaced by a new building that was built a little further north in 1995 and road traffic through the old structure was subsequently stopped.

Individual evidence

  1. The bridge is incorrectly listed in the National Register Information System (NRIS) as Truck Line Bridge No. 1 , so this misnomer is widespread on various websites that mirror this public data. The correct name Trunk comes from the Michigan Department of Transportation website for this bridge and from the bridge's nomination as a Historic Place.
