Today Börnig is a district of the city of Herne in the east , which borders the town of Castrop-Rauxel together with the neighboring district of Holthausen .

history

Around the year 1000, the peasantry Börnig which (formerly Berckel) and the manor in the 19th century, the population centers Vellwig, Voßnacken, Berkel pity castle comprised of the Barons of Pallandt, first mentioned. The name "Borne - Wic" refers to a forest that was burned down to make it arable. Notarizations about Bertold von Börsinghausen and about Heinrich and Walter von Börnig ("Bornevic") are dated to the year 1266. Other documents at this point mention Adam von Sodingen, Bernhard von Düngelen zur Schadeburg and Rykard von Alstede. This means that the Schadeburg was already mentioned in a document at that time.

Plague cross on the linden tree

The so-called “Plague Year ” is dated to the year 1636 , which was during the Thirty Years War , in which the plague cross was erected in the “Eschfeld” as a reminder of the black death and a linden tree was planted. The annual pilgrimage to the plague cross on Urbanus Day on May 25 is a constant reminder of this, because Urbanus was considered the patron of the plague. In addition, the Schadeburg is one of today's ecclesiastical goals. Because the Evangelical Church in Börnig is located on the site of the former Schadeburg. Two paintings in the church and the fact that the street on which the church is located is called “Schadeburgstrasse” remind us of the Schadeburg itself.

After the Peace of Tilsit (1807), the county of Mark is separated from Prussia, given over to the French Empire and attached to the Grand Duchy of Berg . The Grand Duchy of Berg (capital Düsseldorf ) is divided into four departments. The Ruhr department (capital Dortmund ) is made up of three arrondissements. The Arrondissement of Dortmund is divided into six cantons. The canton of Dortmund consists u. a. from the Mairie Castrop with the communities Börnig, Holthausen and Sodingen (Gysenberg). At this point in time, Börnig was not yet managed by Herne, but by Castrop.

Until 1843 Börnig then belonged to the Castrop mayor , belonging to the Dortmund district , then with Holthausen, Sodingen and the Gysenberg to the Castrop office . In 1902, this office was dissolved, so that Börnig, Giesenberg-Sodingen and Holthausen came to the office of Sodingen and were finally incorporated into the city of Herne on April 1, 1928 in the course of the then wave of incorporation, the population of which increased by a third.

In 1907, shaft III / IV of the Friedrich der Große colliery was sunk in Börnig .

Teutoburgia settlement

1909–1923 the Teutoburgia settlement was built for the workers of the Teutoburgia colliery of the same name . Concepts by Ebenezer Howard , a British urban planner and social reformer, were implemented in order to give the settling miners living space on the one hand and to avoid mass rented houses and the disadvantages of urbanization on the other . The colliery was only in operation for two decades at the beginning of the 20th century.
