history

The observation tower in the Volkspark was built with the financial contribution of the Sodingen office

The office was re-established in 1902 by spinning off the office of Castrop. The communities Börnig, Giesenberg-Sodingen (called Giesenberg ) and Holthausen bei Castrop (often with the spelling Kastrop ) belonged to him. On May 30, 1913, the community of Giesenberg-Sodingen was officially renamed Sodingen .

In 1910, the Sodingen Office acquired a site on the wooded hill of the Beimberg in order to create a park above Sodingen, which was called Kaiser Wilhelm Park from 1913 and Volkspark from 1919.

When the Sodingen colliery Mont Cenis wanted to use the hill to erect an iron water tower, the building for the elevated tank was combined with an observation tower at the suggestion of the Sodingen bailiff. The office contributed financially to the establishment. The Essen architect Alfred Fischer was commissioned to design the tower . The reinforced concrete structure called Kaiser Wilhelm Tower was built on the park area in 1912/1913 and, with a height of 31.5 meters, provides a good view of the surrounding area. The tower was inaugurated as part of a folk festival for the 25th anniversary of the eponymous monarch in July 1913. World icon

On April 1, 1928, the Sodingen office was dissolved. Börnig and Sodingen were incorporated into the urban district of Herne . The main part came from Holthausen to Herne. Parts of the area came to the urban district of Castrop-Rauxel .

From 1902 to 1928, the administrative office was located in the Sodinger Amtshaus, which was centrally located in Sodingen on the market square. It was built there in 1894 as a residential building. The building has been preserved and is used as a community youth center.
