From 1725 the Counts of Westerholt owned the Gysenberg Forest. The Gysenberg farmers still belonged to Mairie Castrop in 1808, then to the Castrop mayor. From 1844 the rural communities Gysensberg, Börnig and Holthausen were part of the Castrop office . In 1902 the Castrop office was dissolved and the three municipalities formed the Sodingen office . On April 1, 1928, Gysenberg was incorporated into Herne.

It was not until 1927 that the city of Herne acquired the 103 hectare urban forest for a purchase price of 1,775,000 Reichsmarks from Count Egon Franz von und zu Westerholt. The zoo was inaugurated in 1934. In 1970 the Gysenberg Revierpark was opened. The Gysenberg Forest includes the Posenberg with the Kranenberg farm, whose residents sold part of their property to a construction company in 1979.
