The Gysenberg is an approximately 120 m high elevation in the south of the city of Herne on the border with Bochum ( Gerthe district ). The Gysenberg is one of the Castroper heights . The main natural area is the Westenhellweg .

The plain rises on the southern edge of the Emschertal about 90 meters above the valley floor of the river and forms the watershed to the Ruhr.

On the Gysenberg is the Gysenberg Forest, a mixed beech forest with a very old beech population. In its lower part there is a spring horizon with several springs that feed the Ruhmbach in the east and the Mühlenbach in the west. After a few hundred meters, the Ruhmbach is piped and runs under the Sodingen district , on the northern edge of which it, combined with Sodinger sewage, flows towards the Landwehrbach . After just under a kilometer, the Mühlenbach flows into the Ostbach, which comes from the Hiltrop Volkspark .

In the green area system of the Ruhr area , the Gysenberg is part of the Regionalen Grünzug  e. At the foot of the Gysenberg lies the first district park of the Ruhr area, the Gysenbergpark , whose network of paths continues in the Gysenberg and offers numerous paths for walkers, joggers, cyclists and horse riders.
