The Landwehrbach is a left tributary of the Emscher with a catchment area of 44.183 km². It has a flow length of about 13.1 km. The source is in the Spredey in the southeastern urban area of Castrop-Rauxels , in the border area of the districts of Obercastrop, Merklinde and Bövinghausen . The mouth is in Herne- Horsthausen at Emscher kilometer 42.4.
In Castrop the Obercastroper Bach flows into the Landwehrbach, in the district of Behringhausen the Roßbach, which rises in Herner Langeloh . From the confluence of the Deininghauser Bach in Bladenhorst , the Landwehrbach runs in a south-westerly direction parallel to the Rhine-Herne Canal and Emscher and reaches the area of the city of Herne. The Börniger Bach and the Sodinger Bach flow into Herne-Horsthausen. To the west of the industrial site of Frederick the Great , the stream runs again in a north-westerly direction. This is not the natural course of the stream. In the course of industrialization, the stream was routed in an artificial bed south around the area of the Friedrich der Große colliery. The original course of the brook ran almost in an east-west direction across the colliery area, roughly from the pond on the eastern flank of today's industrial area ⊙ to the Herner Meer on the Rhine-Herne Canal ⊙ . At the end of the 19th century, the brook was passed under the branch canal crossing the Dortmund-Ems canal.
The relocation of the stream used the original Sodinger Bach to direct the water to the Emscher back north. The stream is directed west of the Herne-Ost lock in a culvert under the Rhine-Herne Canal before it flows into the Emscher north of Pöppinghauser Strasse.
In the urban area of Castrop-Rauxels, the Landwehrbach is piped over long distances and developed as a sewer. From the site of the former Erin colliery , it is an open wastewater course. In the urban area of Hernes, the bottom of the brook had to be deepened due to mountain damage so that the flow could be ensured in the area less affected by subsidence.
Renaturation
As part of the conversion of the Emscher system , sewage collectors will be installed parallel to the stream. The stream is then to become an open, pure water course.
In the area of the old town of Castrop, the brook runs underground, but, like the Obercastrop brook, will be exposed again during the renovation that has been carried out since 2008. In addition, new flood retention basins are being created, for example in the wagon. This work is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
Between 2014 and 2017, sewers and rainwater treatments are to be built parallel to the lower reaches north of the Erin site and to the Herner tributaries. Afterwards, renaturation will also take place here. Due to subsidence, the disclosure of the water is difficult, especially in the area of the city of Herne , so that alternative water routes are also being discussed.
