The DIN standard DIN 52034 of the DIN German Institute for Standardization eV regulates the testing of bituminous binders with regard to their tar content in Germany .

Due to the health-endangering effects of tar-containing substances, bituminous binders without polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons should be used in road construction . For this purpose, the standard describes a verification method to indicate the tar content in the bitumen. The so-called anthraquinone reaction is used as a detection method.

The standard was withdrawn in January 2003 without replacement.
