Clarence "Frogman" Henry (born March 19, 1937 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American R&B singer. His best known hit was Ain't Got No Home in 1956 , which bridges the gap between rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll .

biography

As a child, Clarence Henry took piano lessons. His musical role models were Fats Domino and Professor Longhair , whom he imitated during his high school years. He played the piano and trombone in various bands.

In 1956 he got the opportunity to record his own composition Ain't Got No Home for Chess Records . The record became a hit and Henry was nicknamed "Frogman" because he croaked like a frog on the piece.

Extensive tours through the USA followed, initially with traveling shows and later as a solo artist with his own band. Among other things, he appeared in 1957 at the Apollo Theater in New York .

In 1958 Henry went back to New Orleans, where he worked in local clubs from now on. With You Always Hurt the One You Love and the Bobby Charles title (I Don't Know Why) But I Do , he had two more big hits in 1961.

Occasionally he went on tour again, about 1959 as a band leader for Chuck Berry or 1964 with the Beatles . Over time, he has appeared with numerous stars, including Tina Turner , Dr. John , Professor Longhair, Jerry Butler , James Brown , Little Richard , Bonnie Raitt, and many others. His engagements also took him to Europe.

Henry is still on stage and is a regular guest at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
