action

Michael Felgate (Hugh Grant) works for an auction house in New York City . His girlfriend Gina Vitale (Jeanne Tripplehorn) wants to break off the relationship when he asks for her hand. Reluctantly, she reveals the reason - her father Frank Vitale (James Caan) is a member of the Mafia .

Gina agrees to maintain the relationship, but only on the condition that Michael does not do business with the Mafia. This soon pushes for small favors, among other things, the pictures are to be sold in the auction house that the extremely spirited son of the mafia godfather, Johnny, is painting.

Gina accidentally shoots Johnny while he is about to beat Michael up. Michael removes the body together with Gina's father Frank. This will be found the next day. Johnny's father Vito (Burt Young) wants revenge: Frank is supposed to shoot Michael on the wedding day. The two turn to the FBI .

On the wedding day, Gina is shot by Mafioso Vinnie D'Agostino (Joe Viterelli). The prepared FBI agents storm the room and arrest numerous Mafiosi. Gina wakes up in the ambulance - she and Vinnie had a deal with the FBI too, and the shooting was just fake.

Reviews

  • The performance by Hugh Grant was particularly praised, which TV Movie 23/1999 described as convincing across the board .
  • Lexicon of international film : A comedy that is staged in an effective and routine manner, without rough edges and entertaining without going into depth.
  • The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.

Trivia

Much of the pun in the English-language original version is based on the fact that Hugh Grant / Michael Felgate with his pronounced British accent as alleged Mickey Blue Eyes has to learn to speak with the American Italo-Bronx accent of the Mafia. None of this was adopted in the dubbed German version.
