Fats dominoes
Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino Jr. (born February 26, 1928 in New Orleans - † October 24, 2017 in Harvey , Jefferson Parish ) was an American pianist , singer and songwriter specializing in rock 'n' roll , rhythm and Blues , piano blues and boogie woogie .
biography
Fats Domino, who was of French Creole descent, learned to play the piano from his brother-in-law Harrison Verrett . He almost lost his fingers in an accident at the factory where he was already 14 years old. In 1948 he married his childhood friend Rosemary Hall, with whom he raised eight children.
Domino, which his piano in Boogie played -style, in 1949 by producer and bandleader Dave Bartholomew , a former trumpet player in Duke Ellington discovered in a club in New Orleans, where he performed three dollars a week. Bartholomew got him his first record, The Fat Man , which after its release in January 1950 developed into one of the first million-sellers of rhythm and blues and advanced to second place in the R&B charts. The title was to be understood as self-deprecating, because "Fats" (ie "the fat one") brought considerable excess weight onto the stage even then. This first single gave him his breakthrough and was the beginning of a more than ten-year career with Imperial Records , the recordings of which took place almost without exception in Cosimo Matassa's recording studio in New Orleans.
The most successful phase for Fats Domino was the 1950s, when he composed and interpreted a long list of hits in collaboration with Dave Bartholomew and Lew Chudd , the boss of the Imperial record company. His final breakthrough came in 1955 with Ain't that a Shame and in 1956 with Blueberry Hill , which he first performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and which became the biggest hit of his career. Other hits included I'm in Love Again , I'm Walking to New Orleans , My Blue Heaven , Blue Monday and Whole Lotta 'Loving . The well-known Jambalaya was the cover of a country song by Hank Williams . With Blue Monday he appeared in the Hollywood comedy Schlagerpiraten . Because the radio programs broadcast from New Orleans with their frequently played dominoes titles could also be received in Jamaica , Fats Domino had a considerable influence on Jamaican musicians, whose style was just developing at the time.
Since his style of expression hardly changed and groups like The Beatles and Rolling Stones determined the business, Domino's record success declined from the mid-1960s. The last success worth mentioning was the cover version of the Beatles piece Lady Madonna in 1968. As a live performer, however, he was in demand until the 1990s, including on tours in Germany. The song I'm Walkin ' , released in 1957, was used in an Aral advertisement in 1991 and made it onto the German charts again. Fats Domino ranks alongside rock and roll legends like Little Richard and Chuck Berry .
In recent years, Domino has increasingly withdrawn into private life. The exception was an annual concert at the New Orleans Music Festival. The Hurricane Katrina dated 29 August 2005 forced him back into the public eye when he was first reported missing, but later saved his property from the disaster area with the loss of a large part. The American writer and director David Zane Mairowitz processed the story in 2012 in cooperation with SRF as a radio play entitled Category 5: How I Rescued Fats Domino from Hurricane Katrina . In 2007 the album Goin 'Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino was released , on which various rock greats participated. Part of the profit from the sale of this album was used to rebuild the house of Fats Domino. He then moved to Harvey , a suburb of New Orleans. On May 19, 2007, Domino gave a performance at Tipitina's , one of the most famous music bars in New Orleans. Two years later, on May 30, 2009, he showed himself at the festival The Domino Effect , dedicated to him , which raised money for children's playgrounds devastated by the hurricane. Little Richard also performed there.
Honors
The Rolling Stone lists Fats Domino ranked 25th of the 100 greatest musicians and together with Dave Bartholomew ranked 72 of the 100 best songwriters of all time . He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2003. In 1998 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts .
