Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey ( english Everyone has something to hide except me and my monkey ) is a song by British band The Beatles from 1968. It appeared on the double album The Beatles (aka The White Album ) . The song was written by John Lennon , but it appeared under the Beatles' usual author name Lennon / McCartney .

background

In Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey , Lennon describes his relationship with his future wife, Yoko Ono . It describes his feeling that everyone becomes paranoid , but that himself and Ono are exempt from it due to their being in love. In contrast, references to heroin consumption were suspected in the song , for example in the line of text “The deeper you go the higher you fly”. "A monkey on the back" is said to have been a paraphrase for heroin addiction in the 1940s. Lennon denied these references.

admission

The first demo version of Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey on acoustic guitars was made in May 1968 at George Harrison's estate in Esher . This early version is significantly slower and more bluesy than the one released later.

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London in 1968. The producer was George Martin , assisted by Geoff Emerick and Ken Scott . On June 26, 1968, the Beatles rehearsed the song and recorded this rehearsal in case a usable recording was made.

On June 27, 1968, the Beatles recorded six takes of the song. Additional instruments, including the striking hand bell , were added to the last version using the overdubbing method . The song was then mixed in mono to get more free soundtracks. The pace of the song was increased significantly so that the duration changed from 3:07 min to 2:29 min. On July 1 and July 23, 1968, further overdubsessions took place, in which mainly vocals were recorded. The last session was followed by the final mono mix of the song. The stereo version was only made on October 12, 1968.
