renatured stream in Herne

The Ostbach is a 7.1 km long left tributary of the Emscher in North Rhine-Westphalia . Its catchment area covers 12.405 km² (area code 2772372) in Hiltrop and in the central urban area of Hernes .

Course and tributaries

The stream has its source in the southern Hellweg zone and flows northwards towards the Emscherland . It rises in Hiltrop, in Bochum 's Volkspark, and then flows below the Gysenberg in a northerly direction, where it forms the city boundary between Bochum and Herne for a while after the Mühlenbach flows from the Gysenberg. In the area of the Gysenberg Revierpark the brook feeds some former mill ponds in the Herne area. The upper course of the brook and the middle course up to the street Ostbachtal in Herne were renatured between 2003 and 2006 .

The wastewater from the inner city of Herne is still discharged into the Ostbach, which is why it runs underground when it reaches the city center on Schillerstraße. The brook runs in a diagonal line under the east of the inner city of Herne to the train station , from there to Bismarckstrasse the course of the Bahnhofstrasse follows. According to the data from the GeoServer of the state administration of North Rhine-Westphalia, the stream runs from the A 42 to the castle park on the eastern border of the castle park, parallel to Bahnhofstrasse and further in a curve to the north-west parallel to Forellstrasse, but this marks the historical course of the stream bed. According to the data of the Emschergenossenschaft, the Ostbach under Hermann-Löns- / and Baumstrasse is directed to the north, finally already south of the castle park to the west under Dornstrasse and Steinmetzstrasse to the Westring, where the Westbach flows underground. The brook runs along the west side of the palace park in an underground channel.

Until 1903, the lower section of the stream, from the original confluence of the Westbach at the intersection of Bismarckstrasse / Bahnhofstrasse, was called Strünkeder Bach . The water of both streams then flowed together east of Strünkede Castle. It was only with the canalised line of the west brook west of the castle and the overflow of the east brook there that the lower course of the east brook was given the same name.

To the northwest of the Strünkede Castle Park in Herne-Baukau , the brook comes to the surface again and now flows again in a northerly direction. It is passed through a culvert under the Rhine-Herne Canal and flows into the Emscher at Emscher kilometer 40.1 on the city limits of Recklinghausen .

Although the discharges into the renatured section of the Ostbach have now ceased to exist, the wastewater from the parallel sewer is discharged back into the creek in front of the underground creek section on Schillerstrasse.

Planned new lower course

The Emschergenossenschaft has planned for the next few years to re-expose the course of the stream as much as possible and thereby restore its natural character. Since an open guidance of the stream in the inner city of Herne would be very time-consuming, it is now planned to channel the water of the upper reaches over a newly created, 1.4 km long connection to the east located Sodinger Bach . The status of water bodies is to be lifted for the underground section. The necessary planning measures were put out to tender in November 2011.

Historical course

Historical description of the course 1757

Johann Diederich von Steinen was the only body of water that had its source in Herne to mention the Ostbach, then known as the Schmedebecke, in his West-Phälische Geschichte and give a description of the course and use of the brook around the middle of the 18th century:

"The Schmedebecke rises in the Gisenberger Holz, drives the Gisenberger and Wischer mills, including the paper mill at Sodingen, flows through Sodingen and distinguishes the straits Strünckede and Castrop, and unites at Strünckede with the Emscher."

- Johann Diederich von Steinen, 1757

Regardless of the interpretation, which of the springs was described by von Steinen in Gisenberger Holz , Mühlenbach or Ostbach spring, Hiltrop, today regarded as the source of the brook, was also part of the parish of Herne in 1757.

Lower reaches 1842

The lower course of the brook, which deviates from today's course, can be precisely followed on the Prussian first recording of 1842. The Ostbach flowed east of Strünkede Castle. Its water drove the Strünkeder grain mill, today the Schollbrockhaus. A little below was the stalk of the paper mill. The mouth was north of the Lackmann farm, at today's allotment garden complex Holper Heide. The stream flowed into the Emscher at a bend in the river. The Rhine-Herne Canal is located at this position today . The mouth was in what is now the middle of the canal at Recklinghausen city harbor.

fauna

The alpine strudel worm ( Crenobia alpina ) can be found in the area of the sources of the Ostbach . The animals can only be found in waters of water quality class I and are therefore primarily at home in cold, clear sources of mountain streams.
